Bornin1942,hewasfirstnoticedbytheendofsixtiesforhisvisuallyexpressiveandcriticalfilms,andrecognizedbothinhishomecountryYugoslaviaandinternationallywiththedocumentaryTheUnemployed-GrandPrixatOberhausenFestival1968andthefeatureEarlyWorks-GrandPrixatBerlinFilmFestival1969.AfterTitosawhisfeaturedebutEarlyWorkshewasbannedfrommakingfilmsinYugoslavia.Intheearlyseventies,Žilnikwasheavilycriticizedonideologicalgrounds,sincehisfilmswerepartofthe“BlackWave”movement.HemovedtoGermany.BecauseofhiscriticalportrayingoftheconditionsofmigrantworkersandespeciallythefilmÖffentlicheHinrichtungaboutthearrestofRAFmemberswhichwasstagedbymedia,hewassoonforcedtoleaveGermany.BackinYugoslavia,heworkedforsometimeontheaterproductions('’GastarbeiterOpera'’)andsince1980hehasbeenformulatingaspecificlanguageofdocu-dramas.HefoundedtheTeresianumproductioncompanyinBudapestin1993.ThefollowingyearhehelpedininitiatingvideoandtelevisionproductionforthemostradicalandindependentmediainYugoslaviaatthattime-B92inBelgrade.HisfeatureanddocumentarydramasareregardedascultfilmsnotonlyamongformerYugoslavia’salternativescene.
