DamjanKozole(bornin1964)isoneofthemostrecognizedSlovenianfilmmakers.Inhisfilms“someofthemostraffish,funkyandevensordidcharactersdiscovertheirownhumanity”(AlissaSimon,Variety).At22heshothisfirstdramaticpictureTheFatalTelephoneCall(1987),consideredthefirstindependentfilmshotintheformerYugoslavia.Hehasanumberofdocumentaries,shorts,andfeaturestohiscredit,manyofwhichattainedhonorsatinternationalfestivals.Sight&SoundrankedhisSPAREPARTS(2003)among10mostimportantfilmsoftheNewEurope.AfterBerlinaleCompetitionpremiere,filmwonmanyawardsonmorethan50festivalswhereitwasscreened.Releasedinmorethan20countries,itreceivedoneofthebestreviewsoftheyearfromGuardian’sPeterBradshawwhosaid“Kozolehasgivenusoneofthemostpowerfulandprovocativemoviesoftheyear”.LABOUREQUALSFREEDOM(2005)premieredatLocarnoIFFandwasawardedGrandPrixandBestDirectorAwardinValencia.FOREVER(2008)premieredatRotterdamIFF,whilehislatestfeatureSLOVENIANGIRL(2009)openedinSarajevoandTorontoIFF,hitmorethan100festivalsafteritsTorontopremiere.NightlifeisKozole’sninthfeature.
