SumikoKurishima(栗島すみ子KurishimaSumiko?)(15March1902–16August1987)wasaJapaneseactressandmasteroftraditionalJapanesedance.SheisoftenconsideredJapan'sfirstfemalemoviestar.KurishimawasthedaughterofSagoromoKurishima,anactorandnewspaperreporter.Herauntonhermother'sside,FumikoKatsuragi,wasalsoanactress.ShelearnedtraditionalJapanesedancefromanearlyageandusedthenameKakōMizukiwhenperforming.Alsoappearingonstage,sheenteredtheShōchikustudioin1921anddebutedinHenryKotani'sadaptationofSōsekiNatsume'sThePoppy.Oftenappearingasthetragicheroineoffilmsdirectedbyherfuturehusband,YoshinobuIkeda,sheisconsideredJapan'sfirstpopularfemalemoviestar,especiallyconsideringthatmaleonnagataplayedfemalerolesinthemoviesupuntiltheearly1920s.Sheretiredfromthescreenin1938andconcentratedonteachingdance,becomingtheleaderofherownschool.Shedidreturntothescreenin1956,however,toappearinMikioNaruse'sFlowing.
