Inthe1930s,DickPowellwasthejuvenileleadintheWarnerbackstagemusicalsoppositesuchrisingstarsasRubyKeelerandJoanBlondell.Afterhiscareerinmusicals,hewascastinprivate-eyerolesandbecameaproduceranddirectorforbothTVandmovies.HewasavocalistwithCharlieDavis'sorchestrabeforeenteringfilm.InternedatDesertMemorialPark,PalmSprings,California.FatherofEllenPowell,fromhismarriagetoJoanBlondell.HeadoptedJoan'sson,NormanS.PowellinFebruary1938.DiedonthesamedayasJackCarson.Theyhaddifferentformsofcancer.FatherofDickPowellJr.fromhismarriagetoJuneAllyson.HisparentswereEwingandSallieRowenaThompsonPowell.HisbrotherLutherPowellwasbornOctober30,1906,anddiedAugust15,1996.HisbrotherHowardSmithPowellwasbornOctober13,1899,anddiedinJanuary,1986.Hewasyetanothercasualtyofthe1956filmTheConqueror(1956)filmednearanucleartestsiteinUtah.Manyofthepeopleinvolvedwiththefilm,includingPowell,whodirected,eventuallydiedofcancer,eithercausedby,orexacerbatedby,workingonit.OthersincludedactorsJohnWayne,SusanHayward,TeddeCorsia,andAgnesMoorehead.HisdaughterPamelaPowellwasadoptedduringhismarriagetoJuneAllyson.Asofearly2007,hisbirthplaceinthesmalltownofMountainView,ARstillstandsonthenorthsideofMainStreet.It'samodestcirca1895house(sadlyinastateofbenignneglect)withawraparoundporchwithasmallhistoricalmarkerandabadlyweathereddisplayoutinfrontthatdetailshis1936engagementtoJoanBlondell,marriagetoJuneAllysonandmorerecentdeathofhisbrother.
