MelvilleShavelson(April1,1917–August8,2007)wasanAmericanfilmdirector,producer,screenwriter,andauthor.HewasPresidentoftheWritersGuildofAmerica,West(WGAw)from1969to1971,1979to1981,and1985to1987.HecametoHollywoodin1938asoneofcomedianBobHope'sjokewriters,ajobheheldforthenextfiveyears.HeisresponsibleforthescreenplaysofsuchHopefilmsasThePrincessandthePirate(1944),WhereThere'sLife(1947),TheGreatLover(1949),andSorrowfulJones(1949),whichalsostarredLucilleBall.ShavelsonwasnominatedtwiceforAcademyAwardsforBestOriginalScreenplay--firstfor1955'sTheSevenLittleFoys,starringHopeinararedramaticrole,andthenfor1958'sHouseboat.HesharedbothnominationswithJackRose.Healsodirectedbothfilms.OtherfilmshewroteanddirectedincludeBeauJames(1957),TheFivePennies(1959)forwhichhewonaScreenWritersGuildAward,ItStartedinNaples(1960),OntheDouble(1961),ThePigeonThatTookRome(1962),ANewKindofLove(1963),CastaGiantShadow(1966),andYours,MineandOurs(1968),whichstarredHenryFondaandagainwithLucilleBall.Thefilm,acomedyaboutawidow(LucilleBall)andawidower(HenryFonda)raising18childrentogether.WhenMs.BalllateraskedMr.Shavelsonhowheenjoyeddirectingher,TheAssociatedPressreported,hereplied,“Lucy,thisisthefirsttimeIevermadeafilmwith19children.”Ms.Ballwasnotamused.Inadditiontohisfilmwork,ShavelsoncreatedtwoEmmyaward-winningtelevisionseriesandwroteforadozenAcademyAwardshows.Healsowrote,producedandco-directedthesix-hourABCscreenplaytothe1979televisionminiseriesIkeaboutDwightD.Eisenhower,basedontheWorldWarIIexploitsofGen.DwightEisenhower.Healsowrote,miniseriesIke,TheWarYears.Shavelson'sautobiography,publishedbyBearManorMediainApril2007,isentitledHowtoSucceedinHollywoodWithoutReallyTrying,P.S.-YouCan't!Shavelsonwroteseveralotherbooks,including,withMr.Hope,“Don’tShoot,It’sOnlyMe:BobHope’sComedyHistoryoftheUnitedStates”(Putnam,1990),andHowtoMakeaJewishMovie(1971),amemoirofhisexperienceswhileproducinganddirectingCastaGiantShadow,andtheHollywood-themednovelLualda(1973).ShavelsonwasanotedinstructoratUSC'sMasterofProfessionalWritingProgramfrom1998-2006.Hetaughtscreenwriting,whooftencrackedtohisstudents,"I'mawriterbychoice,aproducerbynecessityandadirectorinself-defense."Shavelson'sfirstwife,Lucille,diedin2000.Hewasmarriedtohissecondwife,RuthFlorea,from2001untilhisdeathin2007.Hehadtwochildren,LynneJoinerandRichardShavelson.
