Sometimearound1913-1914,DavebeganworkingasafilmcutterfortheAmericanbranchofPathé,theFrenchcompanythatwastheworld'slargestfilmproductionanddistributioncompany,andthelargestmanufactureroffilmequipment,inthefirstdecadesofthe20thCentury.DaveFleischerwasnotableduringthebrothers'earlydaysastherotoscopemodelfortheirfirstcharacter,KokotheClown.Hewentontobecomedirectorandlaterproducerofthestudio'soutput.Althoughheiscreditedas"director"ofeveryfilmreleasedbytheFleischerstudiofrom1921to1942,theleadanimatorsactuallyperformeddirectorialduties,andFleischermainlyservedasproducer.AmongthecartoonseriesFleischersupervisedduringthisperiodwereTalkartoons,BettyBoopCartoons,PopeyetheSailor,ColorClassicsandseveralothers;PopeyewouldgoontobethetoprivalofMickeyMouse.HealsosupervisedtwoanimatedfeaturesreleasedthroughParamountPictures,Gulliver'sTravels(1939)andMr.BugGoestoTown(1941).ThedebtFleischerStudiosowedtoParamountforthebudgetsofthosefeatures,worsenedbythelackofsuccessthatcamefromthestudio'snon-Popeyecartoons,wascalledinbyParamount;thisforcedthebrotherstogivethestudiotoParamountonMay24,1941.However,bothwerestillabletoremaininchargeofFleischerStudiosforatime.[1]FleischerwasaskedbyParamounttoputthepopularcomicbookheroSupermanintoacartoonseries.Thebig-budgetSupermanseriesbecamethemostsuccessfulcartoonofthelateperiodofFleischerStudios.However,relationsbetweenDaveandMaxweredeteriorating.ThefeudstartingsimmeringafterthemarriedDavebegananadulterousaffairwithhisMiamisecretaryin1938,andwasfollowedbymorepersonalandprofessionaldisputes.[1]DaveFleischerleftforCaliforniatosupervisetherecordingofthescoreforMr.BugGoestoTowninSeptember1941anddidnotreturntothestudio,mailinghisresignationinNovember1941.[1]However,Fleischer'sresignationwasfiledamonthlaterthanallowedbythetermsofhiscontract,andheremainednominallyemployedbyParamountwhilehisbrotherMaxwasforcedoutofthecompanyattheendofDecember1941.[1]DaveFlesicherbecamePresidentofScreenGemsatColumbiaPicturesinApril1942althoughFleischerStudios'contractwithParamountdidnotexpireuntilMay1942,allowingParamounttoterminateFleischerandreorganizethecompanyundertheircontrol.[1]UnderParamount'scontrol,FleischerStudiosbecameFamousStudiosandlaterParamountCartoonStudios,remaininginoperationuntil1967.Inthelate-1940s,FleischermovedovertoUniversal,wherehebecameaspecialeffectsexpertandgeneralproblem-solver,workingonfilmssuchasFrancis(1950),TheBirds(1963),andThoroughlyModernMillie(1967).FleischerdiedofastrokeonJune25,1979inWoodlandHills,California,havingspentoveradecadeinretirement.
