IanCharleson(11August1949–6January1990)wasaScottishstageandfilmactor.HeisbestknowninternationallyforhisstarringroleasOlympicathleteandmissionaryEricLiddell,intheOscar-winning1981filmChariotsofFire.HeisalsowellknownforhisportrayalofRev.CharlieAndrewsinthe1982Oscar-winningfilmGandhi.CharlesonwasanotedactorontheBritishstageaswell,withcriticallyacclaimedleadsinGuysandDolls,CatonaHotTinRoof,FoolforLove,andHamlet,amongmanyothers.OverthecourseofhislifeCharlesonperformednumerousmajorShakespeareanroles,andtheannualIanCharlesonAwardswereestablishedinhishonourin1991,torewardthebestclassicalstageperformancesinBritainbyactorsagedunder30.TheHoughtonMifflinDictionaryofBiographydescribesCharlesonas"aleadingplayerofcharmandpower"and"oneofthefinestBritishactorsofhisgeneration."AlanBateswrotethatCharlesonwas"definitelyamongthetoptenactorsofhisagegroup."IanMcKellensaidCharlesonwas"themostunmanneredandunactorishofactors:alwaystruthful,alwayshonest."CharlesonwasdiagnosedwithHIVin1986,anddiedin1990attheageof40.HerequestedthatitbeannouncedafterhisdeaththathehaddiedofAIDS,inordertopublicizethecondition.ThiswasthefirstcelebritydeathintheUnitedKingdomopenlyattributedtoAIDS,andtheannouncementhelpedtopromoteawarenessandacceptanceofthedisease.
