BorninLosAngeles,California,hegraduatedfromtheUniversityofSouthernCalifornialawschool[2]andbeganinthemoviebusinessasanassistantdirectortoTodBrowningin1920,buthonedhisskillsattheHalRoachStudiosfortherestofthatdecade.HiredbyHalRoachin1923,McCareyinitiallywrotegagsfortheOurGangseriesandotherstudiostars,thenproducedanddirectedshorts,includingtwo-reelerswithCharleyChase.WhileatRoach,McCareycastStanLaurelandOliverHardytogetherandguideddevelopmentoftheironscreencharacters,thuscreatingoneofthemostenduringcomedyteamsofalltime.HeonlyofficiallyappearedasdirectoroftheduoshortsWeFawDown(1928),Liberty(1929)andWrongAgain(1929),butwrotemanyofthescreenplays.By1929,hewasvice-presidentofproductionfortheentirestudio.InthesounderaMcCareyventuredintofeature-filmdirection,workingwithmanyofthebiggeststarsoftheera,includingGloriaSwanson(Indiscreet,1931),EddieCantor(TheKidFromSpain,1932),theMarxBrothers(DuckSoup,1933),W.C.Fields(SixofaKind,1934),MaeWest(BelleoftheNineties,1934),andHaroldLloyd(TheMilkyWay,1936).In1937,McCareywonhisfirstAcademyAwardforDirectingforTheAwfulTruth,withIreneDunneandCaryGrant,ascrewballcomedythatlaunchedCaryGrant'suniquescreenpersona,largelyconcoctedbyMcCarey(GrantalsocopiedmanyofMcCarey'smannerisms).Alongwiththesimilarityintheirnames,McCareyandCaryGrantsharedaneeriephysicalresemblance,makingmimickingMcCarey'sintonationsandexpressionseveneasierforGrant.Aswriter/directorPeterBogdanovichnotes,"AfterTheAwfulTruth,whenitcametolightcomedy,therewasCaryGrantandtheneveryoneelsewasanalso-ran."McCareywasadevoutRomanCatholicanddeeplyconcernedwithsocialissues.Duringthe1940s,hisworkbecamemoreseriousandhispoliticsmoreconservative.In1944hedirectedGoingMyWay,astoryaboutanenterprisingpriest,theyouthfulFatherChuckO'Malley,playedbyBingCrosby,forwhichhewonhissecondBestDirectorOscar.HisshareintheprofitsofthissmashhitgaveMcCareythehighestreportedincomeintheU.S.fortheyear1944,anditsfollow-up,TheBellsofSt.Mary's(1945),whichwasmadebyMcCarey'sownproductioncompany,wassimilarlysuccessful.ThepublicreactednegativelytosomeofhisfilmsaftertheKoreanWar.Forinstance,hisanti-communistfilmMySonJohn(1952),failedattheboxoffice.Fiveyearslater,heco-wrote,produced,anddirectedAnAffairtoRememberstarringCaryGrantandDeborahKerr,aremake(withpreciselythesamescript)ofhis1939filmLoveAffairwithIreneDunneandCharlesBoyer.HefollowedthishitwithRally'RoundtheFlag,Boys!(1958),acomedystarringPaulNewmanandJoanneWoodward.Someyearslaterhedirectedhislastpicture,thepoorly-receivedSatanNeverSleeps(1962).
