JuleeCruiseisanAmericanpopsingerandactressbestknownfortheleadvocalon“Falling”,thethemefortheculttelevisionseriesTwinPeaks.Untilrecently,shewasafrequentcollaboratorwithcomposerAngeloBadalamentianddirectorDavidLynch,whoproducedandwrotethelyricsformostofhersongs.Bornon1December1956,CruisestudiedFrenchhornatDrakeUniversityandperformedasasingerandactressinNewYork,whereshealsoworkedasatalentscoutforAngeloBadalamenti.In1985,BadalamentiwascomposingthescoreforDavidLynch’sBlueVelvet,aswellasservingasthevocalcoachforthefilm’sstar,IsabellaRossellini.AkeysceneinBlueVelvetwasintendedtofeature“SongoftheSiren”byThisMortalCoil,butwhentherightstothesongprovedprohibitivelyexpensive,itwassuggestedthatBadalamenticomposeapopsonginthesamestyle,withlyricswrittenbyLynch.Becausethesongrequiredavocalistwithahaunting,etherealvoice,BadalamentirecommendedJuleeCruise,whohadsung“likeanangel”inaNewYorktheaterworkshopthatBadalamentihadproduced.Theresultoftheirinitialcollaborationwas“MysteriesofLove”,whichfiguresprominentlyinBlueVelvet’sclosingscenes.Positivereactionto“MysteriesofLove”ledBadalamentiandLynchtowriteandproduceadditionalsongsforCruise,mostofwhichwerefeaturedinherdebutalbum,FloatingIntotheNight.Thealbumwasreleasedon12September1989byWarnerBros.Records,andchartedonBillboardthefollowingyear.Amoody,tightlystructuredcollectionofpopsongswithlush,idiosyncraticorchestrationsandintentionallyretrolyrics,FloatingIntotheNightbecameafavoriteofsuchmusiciansasTimBooth,leadsingerofthebandJames,andtechnoartistMoby,whowouldgoontocollaboratewithCruiseontheunreleasedtrack“DrownDisco”.ItalsoprovidedmusicalmaterialfortwoofLynch’sotherprojects.ThefirstwasIndustrialSymphonyNo.1,adark,intentionallyobscureperformancepieceinwhichCruiseperformedwhile“floating”fromaharnessdozensoffeetaboveastageattheBrooklynAcademyofMusic.Thesecond,moresignificantprojectwasthesoundtracktoLynch’sTwinPeaks,forwhichBadalamenticomposedtheoriginalscore.Thesong“Falling”,whichbecametheorchestralthemeforthetelevisionseries,causedaminorsensation,winningaGrammyforBestPopInstrumental,whiletheTwinPeakssoundtrack,featuringCruiseonthesongs“IntotheNight”and“TheNightingale”aswellasonthevocalversionof“Falling”,eventuallybecamethebest-sellingtelevisionsoundtrackofalltime.CruisemadeanumberofappearancesonTwinPeaksasagirlsingeratalocalbar,andwasprominentlyfeaturedintheshow’slandmarkpilotepisode,aswellasin1992’sTwinPeaks:FireWalkWithMe.Thecampybutunsettling“Rockin’BackInsideMyHeart”,thesecondsinglefromFloatingIntotheNight,wasreleasedin1990.CruisealsomadeacontroversialappearanceonSaturdayNightLiveon12May1990,whenscheduledperformerSinéadO’ConnorrefusedtoappearonthesameshowasguesthostAndrewDiceClay.Thefollowingyear,CruiserecordedaLynch-andBadalamenti-producedcoveroftheElvisPresleysong“SummerKisses,WinterTears”forthesoundtrackofWimWenders’sUntiltheEndoftheWorld.Afterwards,Cruisemaintainedarelativelylowprofileuntilhersecondalbum,TheVoiceofLove,wasreleasedin1993.Tomanylistenersandreviewers,thisalbumsufferedincomparisontoitspredecessor,possiblyduetothenumerousotherprojectscompetingforLynchandBadalamenti’sattention.ManyofthetrackswerelittlemorethaninstrumentalsfromWildatHeartorTwinPeaks:FireWalkWithMewithaddedvocals.However,severalsongs,notably“QuestionsinaWorldofBlue”,arerankedbyfansamongCruise’sbest.Cruise’searlycollaborationswithAngeloBadalamentiandDavidLynchwerecloselyrelatedtoLynch’sfilmwork,andtheirlyricsoftenreflectthis.Forexample,“IntotheNight”beginswiththewhisperedwords“Nowit’sdark”,alinewhichwasrepeatedlyspokenbyFrankBooth,DennisHopper’scharacter,inBlueVelvet.LynchalsophotographedCruiseforthelinernotesofFloatingIntotheNightandTheVoiceofLove,andcreatedthesculpturesfeaturedonthecoversofbothalbums.ThefollowingdecadefoundCruiselendinghervocalstoworksbyamoremiscellaneouslistofcollaborators,mostlyintechnoanddancemusic.SheprovidedvocalsandlyricstoseveralofthesongsonWideAngle,thedebutalbumbyWelshelectronicmusicgroupHybrid,notablytheepictechnotrack“IfISurvive”.ShealsoappearedontwoalbumsbydanceartistKhan.Thelyricsformanyofthesesongs,suchas“BodyDump”,reflectCruise’sowninterestintruecrime.Sheappearsonanumberoftracksonthe2003album“DreamsTopRock”byGermanpost-rockactPluramon.CruisealsoactedandsangintheOffBroadwaycastofReturntotheForbiddenPlanet,aspoofofWilliamShakespeare’sTheTempest,andtouredwiththeB-52sin1992and1993.Cruise’slong-delayedthirdalbum,TheArtofBeingaGirl,wasreleasedin2002.ThiswasthefirstofheralbumsforwhichBadalamentiandLynchdidnotproduceorwriteanyofthemusic,withmusicandlyricsforeachofthesongsbeingwrittenbyCruiseherself(withtheexceptionofanupdatedversionofherclassicsingle“Falling”)andguestproducedbyRickStromandMoceanWorker.Thefollowingyear,Cruise’ssong“TheWorldSpins”wasfeaturedinanextendedballetsequenceinRobertAltman’sTheCompany.CruisecurrentlylivesinManhattanwithherhusbandEdwardGrinnan,theeditor-in-chiefofGuidepostsMagazine.
