JohnKaizanNeptune(b.Oakland,California,November13,1951)isanAmericanplayerandbuilderoftheshakuhachi(Japanesebambooflute).Heisknownparticularlyforhisuseoftheinstrumentinnon-traditionalcontexts,suchasjazzandcross-culturalmusic.[1]NeptunestudiedethnomusicologyattheUniversityofHawaii,wherehebegantostudytheshakuhachiwithaJapaneseBuddhistpriestin1971.In1973,hecontinuedhisshakuhachistudiesinKyoto,Japan,returningafteroneyeartoHonolulutocompleteadegreeinethnomusicology.Followinghisgraduation,hetraveledagaintoKyotoforseveralmoreyearsofintensivestudy,andinMarch1977hereceivedthe"shi-han,"ormaster'scertificate,intheTozanSchoolofShakuhachi.Atthattimehewasawardedthehonoraryname"Kaizan,"whichmeansSeaMountain.HelivesinJapan.NeptunehasperformedinNorthAmerica,Europe,Australia,andAsiaandrecordedmorethan20albumswithavarietyofmusicians.Asanon-JapaneseplayingaJapanesetraditionalinstrument,NeptunehasattractedmuchinterestfromtheJapanesepublic.Histhirdrecording,entitledBamboo,wasnamedOutstandingAlbumoftheYearfor1980bytheCulturalAffairsAgencyoftheJapaneseMinistryofEducation,thefirsttimeajazzrecordingorforeignartisthadbeensohonored.HealsomakesshakuhachiandotherbambooinstrumentsathishomeworkshopintheJapanesecountryside.JohnKaizanNeptunehasrecorded21recordssince1979
