MotionPictureDirector.HewastheoldestmemberofHollywood'swell-knownRossonclan,whichincludedsiblingsRichard,Harold,andHeleneRosson.BorninLondon,hearrivedinNewYorkCitywithhisparentsintheearly1890sandenteredfilmsin1909asastuntmanfortheVitagraphstudio.Aftertryinghisluckasanactorandscreenwriter,heturnedtodirectingin1917.RossonspentmuchofhiscareercrankingoutBwesterns,manystarringHootGibson,whomhesuccessfullyguidedfromsilentstotalkies.HehadachancetomakeTinseltown's"AList"whenhewasassignedtodirecttheprototypicalgangstersaga"Underworld"(1927),butwasfiredafterafewdaysandreplacedbyJosefvonSternberg.Amonghis60filmsare"Sahara"(1919),"PollyoftheStormCountry"(1920),"TheTamingoftheWest"(1925),"TheLastOutlaw"(1927),"TheMountedStranger"(1930),"BlazingGuns"(1935),and"BootsofDestiny"(1937).Rossonwasalsoasecond-unitdirectorforeveryCecilB.DeMilleepicfrom"ThePlainsman"(1936)to"TheTenCommandments"(1956),andhewasemployedexclusivelyinassistantcapacitiesafter1938.
