MockywasborninNice,FrancetoPolishimmigrantparents,JeanneZylinskaandAdamMokiejewski.HisfatherwasJewishandhismotherwasCatholic.Mockyappearedasanactorinthe1955filmGliSbandatiandinmanyothermovies,includingsomeofthosehealsodirected(Solo,L'albatros,L'Ombred'unechance,UnLinceuln'apasdepoches).His1987filmLeMiraculéwasenteredintothe37thBerlinInternationalFilmFestival.Hebeganasanactorinthecinemaandtheater.Inparticular,heplayedinJeanDréville'sLesCasse-pieds(1948),JeanCocteau'sOrphée(1950)andBernardBorderie'sTheMaskoftheGorilla(1957).ButitwasespeciallyinItalythathebecamefamous,thankstohisroleinIvintibyMichelangeloAntonioni.AfterworkingasanassistantwithLuchinoViscontionSenso(1954)andFedericoFellinionLastrada(1954),hewrotehisfirstfilm,LaTêtecontrelesmurs(1959)andplannedtodirectithimself,buttheproducerpreferredtoentrustthetasktoGeorgesFranju.HewentontodirectthefollowingyearwithLesDragueurs(1959).Sincethen,hehasneverstoppedshooting.Asearlyasthe1960s,hewasabletoreachawideaudiencewithcrazycomediessuchasAFunnyParishioner(1963)andLaGrandeLessive(1968).AfterMay1968,heturnedtodarkerfilmswithSolo(1969),inwhichheshowsagroupofyoungterroristsoftheextremeleft,thenL'Albatros(1971)whichshowsthecorruptionofpoliticians.Inthe1980s,hereturnedtosuccesswithafilmdenouncing,ayearbeforethedramaofHeysel,theexcessesofsomefootballfans(Àmortl'arbitre,1984)andacomedydenouncingthehypocrisyaroundthepilgrimagetoLourdes(LeMiraculé,1987).Inthe1990sand2000s,hisfilmsmetwithlesssuccess,butMockycontinuedtoshootwithmuchenthusiasm.Inthebeginning,hisfilmswerededicatedtotheuprisingagainsttherestrictionsimposedbysociety.Later,heconcentratedonfarce,asinBonsoirwherethehomelessAlex(MichelSerrault)pretendstobetheloverofthelesbianCaroline(ClaudeJade)inordertosaveherinheritancefromherhomophobicrelatives.Mocky'scinema,oftensatiricalandpamphleteer,isgenerallyinspiredbythetruthofsociety.Heworkedwithfewresourcesandfilmedveryquickly.HeworkedwithBourvil(AFunnyParishioner,TheCityofUnspeakableFear,LaGrandeLessiveandTheStallion),Fernandel(TheExchangeandLife),MichelSimon(TheRedIbis),MichelSerrault(twelvefilmsincludingLeMiraculé),FrancisBlanche(fivefilmsincludingTheCityofUnspeakableFear),JacquelineMaillan(fivefilms),JeanPoiret(eightfilms)andwiththestarsCatherineDeneuve(AgentTrouble),ClaudeJade(Bonsoir),JaneBirkin(Noircommelesouvenir),JeanneMoreau(LeMiraculé)andStéphaneAudran(TheSeasonsofPleasure).In2010,hereceivedthePrixHenri-Langloisforhisentirecareerandthe2013AlphonseAllaisPrize.TheInternationalFestivalofFilmEntrevuesinBelfortin2012andtheCinémathèquefrançaisein2014dedicatedfullretrospectivestohim.Hediedon8August2019.
