Bornin1919inJerusalem,NehemiahPersoffimmigratedwithhisfamilytoAmericain1929.FollowingschoolingattheHebrewTechnicalInstituteofNewYork,hefoundajobasasubwayelectriciandoingsignalmaintenanceuntilaninterestinthetheateralteredthedirectionofhislife.HejoinedamateurgroupsandsubsequentlywonascholarshiptotheDramaticWorkshopinNewYork.ThisledtowhatwouldhavebeenhisBroadwaydebutinaproductionof"EveofSt.Mark",buthewasfiredbeforetheshowopened.HemadehisofficialNewYorkdebutinaproductionof"TheEmperor'sNewClothes"in1940.WWIIinterruptedhisyoungcareerin1942,returningtothestageafterhishitchintheArmywasover,threeyearslater.HesoughtworkinstockplaysandbecameaninternofStellaAdlerand,asaresult,astrongexponentoftheActor'sStudio.DiscoveredbyCharlesLaughtonandcastinhisproductionof"Galileo"in1947,PersoffmadehisfilmdebutayearlaterwithanuncreditedbitinTheNakedCity(1948).Short,dark,chunky-framedandwithadistincttalentfordialects,Persoffbecameknownprimarilyforhisethnicvillainy,usuallyplayingauthoritativeEasternEuropeans.InaformidablecareerthathadhimportrayingeverythingfromcabdriverstoJosephStalin,standoutfilmroleswouldincludeLeoinTheHarderTheyFall(1956)withHumphreyBogart,GeneConfortiinAlfredHitchcock'sTheWrongMan(1956),AlbertinThisAngryAge(1957)andgangsterJohnnyTorrioinAlCapone(1959).Thatsameyearheplayedanothergangster,thesmallroleofLittleBonaparte,inSomeLikeItHot(1959).HewasadurableperformerduringTV's"GoldenAge"(Gunsmoke(1955),TheTwilightZone(1959))andwellbeyond(ChicagoHope(1994),Law&Order(1990)),playinghundredsofintense,volatileanddominatingcharacters.Inlateryears,hischaractersgrewabitsofterasBarbraStreisand'sJewishfatherinYentl(1983)andthevoiceofPapaMousekewitzintheAn
