CarrollwasborninWeedonBec,Northamptonshire,toWilliamandCatherineCarroll.HisRomanCatholicparentsnamedhimafterthen-PopeLeoXIII.In1897,hisfamilylivedinYork,wherehisIrish-bornfatherwasaforemaninanordnancestore.Inthe1901CensusforWestHam,Essex,hisoccupationislistedas"winetradeclerk".Inthe1911census,heislivingatthesameaddressanddescribedasa"dramaticagent".Carrollmadehisstagedebutin1912.HisactingcareerwasonholdduringtheFirstWorldWar,whenheservedintheBritishArmy.HethenperformedinLondonandonBroadwayinNewYork.In1933,hewasamemberoftheManhattanTheatreRepertoryCompanyintheinauguralseasonoftheOgunquitPlayhouseinOgunquit,Maine.During1933-34CarrollhadanimportantroleinasuccessfulBroadwayplay,TheGreenBayTree(whichhasnorelationtothenovelbyLouisBromfieldapartfromthesharedtitle),andin1941starredwithVincentPriceandJudithEvelyninPatrickHamilton'sAngelStreet(betterknownasGasLight),whichranforthreeyearsattheGoldenTheatreonWest45thStreetinNewYorkCity.Aftertheproductionclosed,hestarredinthetitleroleinJ.P.Marquand'sTheLateGeorgeApley.
