JohnGervaseDighton(8December1909–16April1989)wasaBritishplaywrightandscreenwriter.DightonwasborninLondontoBasilLewisDighton,ofWestKensington,anantiquesdealer,authorandpoet,andhiswifeBeatriceMary(néeFranks).HewaseducatedatCharterhouseSchoolandCaiusCollege,Cambridge.Hisoutputduringthe1940sincludedcomedianWillHay'slaststarringfeatures,andseveralGeorgeFormbyfilmsaswellasthe1947adaptationofCharlesDickens'NicholasNickleby,andthe1943warmovieUndercoverstarringJohnClementsandMichaelWilding.In1947Dightonwrotehisfirstplayforthetheatre,TheHappiestDaysofYourLife,whichranintheWestEndformorethan600performancesin1948and1949.ForEalingStudios,hecollaboratedonthescreenplaysofsuchcelebratedcomediesasKindHeartsandCoronets(1949)andTheManintheWhiteSuit(1952),sharinganAcademyAwardnominationforthelatter.HegainedasecondnominationfortheAmerican-financedRomanHoliday(1953).Twoofhismorepopularstageplays,TheHappiestDaysofYourLifeandWhoGoesThere!(knownasThePassionateSentryintheUSA),weresuccessfullyadaptedforthescreenbyDightonhimself,theformerincollaborationwithFrankLaunder.Healsowrotethe1955comedyplayManAlive!thattransferredtotheWestEndthefollowingyearwithRobertsonHareinthelead.HeadaptedtheplaySummeroftheSeventeenthDoll.HisfinalscreencreditwashisadaptationofShaw'sTheDevil'sDisciple,writtenincollaborationwithRolandKibbee.DightonmarriedKathleenMariePhilippsin1934.
