RolandFrederickGodfrey(born27May1921)isaBritishanimatorwhosecareerspansmorethanfiftyyears.Heisprobablybestknownforthechildren'scartoonseriesRoobarb(1974),NoahandNellyin...SkylArk(1977)andHenry'sCat(1983)andfortheTriochocolatebiscuitadvertisementsshownintheUKduringtheearly1980s.However,hehasalsoproducedaBAFTAandAcademyaward-winningshortfilmGreat(1975),atongue-in-cheekbiographyofIsambardKingdomBrunel.HewaspreviouslynominatedforaAcademyAwardforhisfilmKamaSutraRidesAgain(1971)whichwasscreenedwiththeUKreleaseofStanleyKubrick'sfilmAClockworkOrange.FurtherAcademyAwardsnominationswerereceivedforDreamDoll(1980),withZlatkoGrgic,andSmallTalk(1994).HeworkedatLarkinsStudioforaperiodwithPeterSachsbeforeleavingtosetupBiographicwithKeithLearner,JeffHale.FurthermembersjoinedincludingNancyHannaandVeraLinnecar.WhilestillworkingatLarkinshemadeBigParade(1952)andWatchtheBirdie(1954),afilminspiredbyapaintingbyPaulKlee,bothwerefilmedinthebasementofhisflat.HesubsequentlymadeDoItYourselfCartoonKitwhichsatirisesanimationandcommercialadvertising.Theuseofdifferentanimatedforms,materialsandtechniquesmakesitoneofhismostexcitingfilmstowatch.Theuseofcutoutanimationforthenarratorpre-datesTerryGilliam'suseofthetechnique,andthefilmisoftenmis-creditedasbeingproducedbyGilliam.MichaelBentineprovidedthenarrationforthefilmandworkedwithGodfreyonanumberoffilmsandcommercials.MostofGodfrey'sanimatedworkduringthe1950sand1960sappearedinTVcommercials,butin1964hestartedhisowncompanyBobGodfrey'sMovieEmporiumtodevelophisowncreativeprojectsincludingthefamouschildren'scartoons.HeisalsorecognisedforanumberofslightlyrisquécartoonssatirisingBritishsexualhabits,suchasHenry9To5,whichwasalsoawardedaBAFTAin1971.HealsoanimatedtheclassiccartoonAlf,BillandFred.Aswellasanimationheproducedliveactioncommercialsandshortfilms.AnumberofthemstarredtheartistBruceLaceywhoappearedinBattleofNewOrleans,TheHangingTree.Hisinterestinliveactionincludedanumberofappearancesinself-directedcommercialsandminorfilmrolesincludingTheBeatles'filmHelp!(1965)andCasinoRoyale(1967).In1965heanimatedfourepisodesofTheBeatles,ananimatedtelevisionseriesfeaturingthepopband,whichhadbeensub-contractedouttodifferentstudios.GodfreyalsoworkedasanuncreditedadviseronYellowSubmarine(1968).In1974hepresentedDo-ItYourselfFilmAnimationShowonBBC1whichencouragedchildrentodoanimation;eachepisodehadestablishedanimatorstalkingabouttheirworkanddifferentanimationtechniques.GuestsincludedRichardWilliamsandTerryGilliam.Theserieshassubsequentlybeenacknowledgedbyanewgenerationofanimators,includingNickPark,asasignificantinfluenceonthemmakinganimatedfilms.Laterfilmsincludingsocial,politicalsatiresbasedontheworkonSteveBellwhichincludedBeakstotheGrindstoneandAJournalist'sTale.HeworkedwithBellagainontheseriesMaggieWhereIamNow?.IntheThamesTelevisiondocumentaryTheThiefWhoNeverGaveUp,broadcastinthelate1980s,animatorRichardWilliamscreditsGodfreywithgivinghimhisstartinthebusiness,"BobGodfreyhelpedme...Iworkedinthebasementandwoulddoworkinkind,andhewouldletmeusethecamera...[itwas]abartersystem".[1]HewasawardedanMBEin1986andreceivedthenewlyestablishedLifetimeAchievementAwardattheBradfordAnimationFestivalon18November2007,withthefestivalincludingaretrospectiveofhisfilms.Hehasappearedonanumberofprogrammesanddocumentariesonanimationovertheyears,includingtheBBC2documentaryTheCraftsmenandthedocumentaryseriesAnimationNation,shownonBBCFourin2005.
