TadeuszKonwicki(bornJune22,1926)isaPolishwriterandfilmdirector,amemberofthePolishLanguageCouncil.Konwickiwasbornin1926inNowaWilejkanearVilnius,wherehespenthisearlychildhood.HespenthisadolescenceinVilnius,attendingalocalgymnasium.ImmediatelyfollowingtheoutbreakofWorldWarII,VilniuswasoccupiedbytheSovietUnionandsubsequentlybyNaziGermany,andalleducationforPoleswasdiscontinued.Konwickicontinuedhisstudiesunderground.In1944,hejoinedtheranksofalocalHomeArmypartisanunit,takingpartinOperationTempestandOperationOstraBrama.AfterthewarVilniuswasannexedbytheSovietUnionandKonwickiwasexpatriated.Inthespringof1945KonwickimovedtoKraków,whereheenrolledatJagiellonianUniversity.HealsostartedtoworkasajournalistatOdrodzenieweekly,movingtoWarsawin1947tocontinuehisworkforthemagazine.Inthecapital,hewasoneoftheleadingadvocatesforSocialistRealisminliterature.In1948hefinishedhismemoirsofhispartisanyears(Rojsty),butthebookwasnotpublisheduntil1956.HisliterarydebutwastheproductionnovelConstructionSite(1950,PrzyBudowie),whichwasfollowedbythenovelPower(1954,Władza).His1956novelFromaBesiegedCity(1956,Zoblężonegomiasta)alsobecamequitepopular.Intheyears1952-1966hewasamemberofPolishUnitedWorkers'PartyBythemid1950s,KonwickihadbecomedisillusionedbythecommunistregimeinPolandandfelloutofgracewiththeparty.Hislaterworks(beginningwithAHoleintheSky(1959,Dziurawniebie),aremostlyconcernedwiththeauthor'schildhoodandthesemi-mythical,romanticlandofhisyouth.AtthistimeKonwickibecametheheadoftheKadrFilmStudioandhassincebeenrecognizedasoneofthemostnotablemembersofthePolishFilmSchool.However,hisworkveeredawayfromthestylepursuedbyhiscontemporaries,duetoitsuniquelybitterquality.AsafilmmakerheisknownforhisVenice'58GrandPrixwinnerTheLastDayofSummer(Ostatnidzieńlata,1958),AllSouls'Day(Zaduszki,1961),aswellasforhismasterpiecesSalto(1962)andHowFarAway,HowNear(Jakdalekostąd,jakblisko(1973)),aswellasfilmadaptations:ofNobelPrizeWinnerCzeslawMiloszbookDolinaIssy(1982),andofAdamMickiewicz'sepicpoemDziady-Lawa(1990).Heiswidelyknownfortwonovels,publishedbythePolishundergroundpress:ThePolishComplex(1977)andAMinorApocalypse(1979).Thelatterwork,abittersatireaboutawashed-upwriterwhoisaskedtoburnhimselfinfrontoftheSoviet-builtPalaceofCultureandScience,Warsaw,wassubsequentlyadaptedasthebasisofaFrenchfilmbearingthesametitle.KonwickicurrentlylivesinWarsawandcontinuestoinspireyouthwritersandfilmmakers.
