HollisFramptonisknownforthebroadandrestlessintelligencehebroughttothefilmshemade,beginningintheearly'60s,untilhisdeathin1984.Inadditiontobeinganimportantexperimentalfilmmaker,hewasalsoanaccomplishedphotographerandwriter,andinthe1970smadesignificantcontributionstotheemergingfieldofcomputerscience.Heisconsideredoneofthepioneersofwhathascometobetermedstructuralism,aninfluentialstyleofexperimentalfilmmakingthatusesthebasicelementsofcinematiclanguagetocreateworksthatinvestigatefilmformattheexpenseoftraditionalnarrativecontent.AlongwithMichaelSnowandStanBrakhage,heisoneofthemajorfigurestoemergefromtheNewYorkavant-gardefilmcommunityofthe1960s.
