JosephAngeloD'AllesandroIII(bornDecember31,1948)isanAmericanactorandWarholsuperstar.HavingalsocrossedoverintomainstreamrolessuchasmobsterLuckyLucianointhefilmTheCottonClub,Dallesandrowasasexsymbolofgaysubcultureinthe1960sand1970s,andofseveralAmericanundergroundfilms.Dallesandrostarredinthe1968filmFleshasamaleprostitute.ThefilmwasproducedbyAndyWarhol.In1970,RollingStonedeclaredDallesandro'ssecondstarringvehicle,Trash,the"BestFilmoftheYear",makinghimastaroftheyouthculture,sexualrevolution,andsubculturalNewYorkCityartcollectiveofthe1970s.Dallesandroalsostarredin1972'sHeat,anotherWarholfilmthatwasconceivedasaparodyofthefilmSunsetBoulevard.EarlylifeJoeDallesandrowasborninPensacola,Florida,toJosephAngeloD'AllesandroII,whowasintheU.S.Navy.Hismother,ThelmaTestman,was16yearsold.BythetimeJoeIIIwasfiveyearsold,hismotherwasservingfifteenyearsinaFederalPenitentiaryforinterstateautotheft.DallesandroandhisbrotherBobbyweretakentoNewYorkbytheirfather,whoworkedasanelectricalengineer.BothboyswereeventuallyplacedintotheAngelGuardianHomeinHarlem,priortobeingfosteredbyacoupleinBrooklyn.ThefamilylatermovedtoNorthBabylon,LongIsland.TheseniorD'Allesandrowouldvisitthemaboutonceamonthattheirfosterparents'home.Dallesandrowasinitiallycontentlivingwithhisfosterparents,butlaterreportedlybegantoresentthem,thinkingthattheywerepreventinghimfromlivingwithhisfather.Dallesandrobeganactingout,andbecameaggressive.HerepeatedlyranawayfromhisfosterhomeuntilhisbirthfatherfinallyrelentedandallowedJoetolivewithhim.Atage14,DallesandroandhisbrothermovedtoQueenstolivewiththeirpaternalgrandparentsandtheirfather.Atage15,hewasexpelledfromschoolforpunchingtheschoolprincipal,whohadreportedlyinsultedhisfather.Afterthis,hebeganhangingoutwithgangsandstealingcars.Inonesuchinstance,DallesandropanickedandsmashedthestolencarhewasdrivingthroughthegateoftheHollandTunnel.Hewasstoppedbyapoliceroadblockandwasshotonceinthelegbypolicewhomistakenlythoughthewasarmed.Dallesandromanagedtoescapebeingcaughtbypolice,butwaslaterarrestedwhenhisfathertookhimtothehospitalforhisgunshotwound.HewassentencedtoCampCassRehabilitationCenterforBoysintheCatskillsin1964.In1965,aged16,heranawayfromthecamp,andsupportedhimselfbynudemodeling,appearingmostnotablyinshortfilmsandmagazinephotosforBobMizer'sAthleticModelGuild.CareerUndergroundfilmcareerDallesandrometAndyWarholandPaulMorrisseyin1967whiletheywereshootingFourStars,andtheycasthiminthefilmonthespot.Warholwouldlatercomment"Inmymovies,everyone'sinlovewithJoeDallesandro."DallesandroplayedahustlerinhisthirdWarholfilm,Flesh(1968),wherehehadseveralnudescenes.Fleshbecameacrossoverhitwithmainstreamaudiences,andDallesandrobecamethemostpopularoftheWarholstars.NewYorkTimesfilmcriticVincentCanbywroteofhim:"Hisphysiqueissomagnificentlyshapedthatmenaswellaswomenbecomedisconnectedatthesightofhim."AsDallesandro'sundergroundfamebegantocrossoverintothepopularculture,heappearedonthecoverofRollingStoneinApril1971.Hewasalsophotographedbysomeofthetopcelebrityphotographersofthetime:FrancescoScavullo,AnnieLeibovitz,RichardAvedon.DallesandroappearedinLonesomeCowboys(1968),Trash(1970),Heat(1972),AndyWarhol'sFrankenstein,andAndyWarhol'sDracula(both1974),alsodirectedbyMorrissey.TheselasttwofilmswereshotinEurope.Afterfilmingwascomplete,hechosenottoreturntotheU.S.HeappearedinSergeGainsbourg'sJet'aimemoinonplus(France,1976),whichstarredGainsbourg'sgirlfriend,BritishactressJaneBirkin.MainstreamcareerDallesandrocontinuedtostarinfilmsmademainlyinFranceandItalyfortherestofthedecade,returningtotheU.S.inthe1980s.Hemadeseveralmainstreamfilmsduringthe1980sand1990s.Oneofhisfirstnotableroleswasthatof1920sgangsterLuckyLucianoinFrancisCoppola'sTheCottonClub(1984).Workingwithmanager/attorneyStannFindelle,hiscareerenjoyedaresurgence.HehadrolesinCriticalCondition(1987)oppositeRichardPryor,Sunset(1988)withBruceWillisandJamesGarner,Cry-Baby(1990)withJohnnyDepp,Guncrazy(1992)withDrewBarrymore,andStevenSoderbergh's1999filmTheLimey.Hehasalsoworkedintelevision.In1986,heco-starredintheABCdramaseriesFortuneDane.Theserieslastedonlyfiveepisodes.Dallesandrowasalsoaregularforthefirstseason(1987-1988)oftheCBScrimedramaseriesWiseguy,appearedthreeepisodesonNBC’sMiamiVice,andatwohourepisodeofABC'sMatlockin1990.TheTeddyAward,anhonorrecognizingthosefilmmakersandartistswhohavecontributedtothefurtheracceptanceofLGBTpeople,cultureandartisticvision,wasawardedtoJoeinFebruary2009.Abiography,LittleJoe:SuperstarbyMichaelFergusonwasreleasedearlierin2001,andafilmeddocumentary,LittleJoe(2009),wasreleasedwithDallesandroservingaswriterandproducer.Hisadopteddaughter,VedraMehagian,alsoservedasaproducerofthefilm.HeappearedintheDandyWarhols'officialvideoforYouareKillingMein2016.In2018hestarredashimselfinUliLommel'sFactoryCowboys:WorkingwithWarhol.ThefilmwasbasedonLommel'sownbiographyandpartlyonDallesandro'smemoriesoftheperiodduringwhichheworkedwithAndyWarhol.PersonallifeEditDallesandroisopenlybisexual,hasmarriedthreetimes,andhasthreechildren.Hemarriedhisfirstwife,Leslie,thedaughterofhisfather'sgirlfriend,in1967.Theirson
