MikhailAlexandrovichUlyanovHewasnamedPeople'sArtistoftheUSSRin1969andreceivedaspecialprizefromtheVeniceFilmFestivalin1982.HespenthischildhoodandyouthinthetownofTara,OmskOblast.AlthoughhehadfailedhisexamsinSchepkinskoeSchoolandfortheMoscowArtTheatreSchool,[1]hemovedtoOmskin1944tobecomeanactor.AftertwoyearsofstudiesinthestudioatOmskDramahewenttoMoscowandenteredtheSchukinTheatreSchoolin1946.UlyanovworkedintheVakhtangovTheatrefrom1950anddirecteditfrom1987.Heplayedawiderangeofcharactersonstage,withRogozhininDostoevsky’sIdiotbeingthemostremarkableofthem.In1979hestagedVasilyShukshin’sepicnovelIhavecometogiveyoufreedom,wherehestarredasStepanRazin.In1985MikhailUlyanovstagedthesatiricalpamphletTheChildBuyerbytheAmericanplaywrightJohnHersey.Asregardsmovies,hewasfrequentlycastinthepartsofstaunchCommunistleaderslikeVladimirLeninandMarshalZhukov.Hiswell-knowncharacterYegorTrubnikovinPredsedatel(Chairman)(1964)becameaSovietclassicandhismostemblematicrole.TheBrothersKaramazov,a1969filmheco-directed,wasnominatedfortheAcademyAwardforBestForeignLanguageFilm[2]andwasenteredintothe6thMoscowInternationalFilmFestival.[3]HealsostarredinTema(1979)andPrivateLife(1982),thefilmsthatwontopawardsattheBerlinFilmFestivalandVeniceFilmFestival,respectively.Morerecently,hewasacclaimedfortherolesofJuliusCaesarinthescreeningofShakespeare'splay(1990),PontiusPilateinthefilmadaptationofTheMasterandMargarita(1994),andanavengingveteranmarksmaninTheRiflemanoftheVoroshilovRegiment(1999),directedbyStanislavGovorukhin.HediedonMarch26,2007ofintestinaldisease.
