BrunoSchleinstein(June2,1932–August11,2010)wasaGermanfilmactor,artist,andmusician.Schleinsteinwasoftenbeatenasachild,andspentmuchofhisyouthinmentalinstitutions.[1]Hewasalargelyself-taughtmusician,whoovertheyearsdevelopedconsiderableskillonthepiano,accordion,glockenspielandhandbells.Hewouldplayinbackgardensperforming18thand19thcenturystyleballadsattheweekends,whilesustaininghimselffinanciallyworkingasaforkliftdriveratacarplant.Schleinsteinsaidhetransmits(German:durchgeben)hissongs,ratherthansingingthem.[1]SchleinsteinwasspottedbydirectorWernerHerzoginthedocumentaryBrunoderSchwarze–EsbleibteinJägerwohlinseinHorn(1970).HerzogpromptlycastSchleinstein(underthenameBrunoS.)ashisleadactorinTheEnigmaofKasparHauser(1974),thoughhehadnoactingexperience.SchleinsteinalsostarredinStroszek(1977),whichHerzogwroteespeciallyforhiminfourdays.StroszekhasanumberofbiographicaldetailsfromSchleinstein'slife,includingtheuseofhisownflatasthehomeofBrunoStroszek.Healsoplayedhisowninstruments.HerzoghasclaimedthatSchleinsteinwasdeeplysuspiciousofthedirector,andnervousofperforminginfrontofthecameras—sohadtobe"listenedto"forseveralhoursonsetinordertobuildhisself-esteem.SchleinsteinenjoyedfameinBerlinfollowingthereleaseofthesefilms,butsaidlaterthat"Everybodythrewhimaway."[1]Instead,hetookuppaintingandmusic.Someofhisartworkwasshownatthe2004OutsiderArtFairinNewYorkCity.HeappearedinfilmagaininJanRalske'sVergangen,vergessen,vorüber(Long-lostandLayMeDown)in1993.RalskealsomadeashortdocumentaryvideoaboutSchleinsteinandhisart,calledSeeingThings.Hewasthesubjectofa2003documentary"BrunoS.–Estrangementisdeath",directedbyMironZownir.SchleinsteinalsoreleasedaCDofhismusicandsongs,hewasmemberoftheNO!Artmovement.SchleinsteindiedAugust11,2010aftersufferingheartproblems.Shortlyafterhisdeath,WernerHerzogremarked“inallmyfilms,andwithallthegreatactorswithwhomIhaveworked,hewasthebest.Thereisnoonewhocomesclosetohim.Imeaninhishumanity,andthedepthofhisperformance,thereisnoonelikehim.”
