FinchwasborninCaterham,Surrey,thesonofamerchantbanker.Hefirststartedactingatschool,latergainingexperienceinamateurtheatregroups.Afterservinginaparachuteregimentduringhismilitaryservice,hejoinedanSASreserveregiment.FinchhadstartedactingprofessionallywithseveraldifferentrepertorycompaniesaroundtheUKbeforehegotapartinCrossroads,thepopulardaytimesoap,duringitsfirstrunin1964.FinchthenappearedinZ-Cars(1967-68)andin10episodesofCounterstrike(1969),ashort-livedBBCsci-fiseriesaboutanalien(Finch)senttoEarthtosaveitfromextinction.HisfilmcareerbeganintwohammyHammerhorrors,TheVampireLoversandTheHorrorofFrankenstein(both1970).Polanski,whohadmadehisowncomichorrormovie,TheFearlessVampireKillers(1967),thoughtFinchhadthecredentialstoplayMacbeth.
