MawlewasborninOxford.HegrewupinaVictorianmanorhouseonafarmoutsideShipston-on-Stour,Warwickshire.HeisoneofthreechildrenfromafamilywithahistoryofninegenerationsoffarminginWarwickshire.Hismotherwasateacher.HisfatherRichardstillfarmstheland.[1]HeattendedTheCroftprepschoolontheoutskirtsofStratford-upon-Avonwherehewasdiagnosedasseverelydyslexicandasaresulthewentfromtheagesof13to16ataboardingschoolforspecialneeds.Mawlelefttheschoolat16tobecomeanactor,butcontractedlabyrinthitis,leavinghim70percenthearing-impairedintheupperregisterandwithtinnitus.HepersuadedthedirectorofthelocalcollegeatStratford-upon-AvontolethimstudyforaBTECinperformingartswhiledoinganassortmentofjobssuchasfitnessinstructoranddish-washer.[2]HedidalsodosomeactingfortheBoxCleverTheatreCompanyandinhisownproductionof'SoloHamlet'.HewonascholarshiptostudyattheBristolOldVic'stheatreschool.[2]MawlegraduatedfromBristolOldVicTheatreSchoolin2002inthesameyearheappearedintheIrishHurlingTVadvertsforGuinness.Heleftin2002withnoagentandworkedasanassistantinaspecialneedsschool.Helandedhisfirstmajorroleina2003productionofTroilusandCressidaplayingTroilusforShakespeareatTheTobaccofactory,workattheNuffieldTheatre,Southampton,inHamletandin2005theRoyalExchangeManchester'sproductionofAntony&Cleopatrafollowed.ItwashisperformanceinthetelevisionfilmSoundproofin2006thatmadehisbiggestimpactwhereadeafactorwasneededfortheleadrole.MawlewasnominatedfortheRTSBreakthroughOnScreenAwardanddirectorEdCoulthardwontheBAFTAforbestdirectorin2007.
