Born March20,1922inTheBronx,NewYorkCity,NewYork,USAHeight 6'1½"(1.87m)MiniBio(1)CarlReinerisalegendofAmericancomedy,havingachievedgreatsuccessasacomicactor,adirector,producerandrecordingartist.HehaswonnineEmmyAwards,threeasanactor,fourasawriterandtwoasaproducer.HealsowonaGrammyAwardforhis"2,000YearOldMan"album,basedonhiscomedyroutinewithMelBrooks.ReinerwasborninTheBronx,toBessie(Mathias)andIrvingReiner,awatchmaker.HisfatherwasanAustrianJewishimmigrantandhismotherwasaRomanianJewishimmigrant.Attheageofsixteen,whileworkingasasewingmachinerepairman,heattendedadramaticworkshopsponsoredbytheWorksProgressAdministration.Thedirectionofhislifewasset.Inthe1970s,somesourcesclaimedthatReinermadehismoviedebutinNewFacesof1937(1937),butthatisunlikelyashewouldhaveonlybeen15yearsoldatthetime.(themoviesharesthesameplotashiserstwhilepartnerMelBrooks'1968classic,TheProducers(1967),withacrookedproducerplanningtofleecehis"angels"byproducingaflopandabscondingwiththemoney).Hedidn'tappearonscreen,silverorsmall,untilhemadehisTVdebutin1948intheshort-livedTVseries,TheFashionStory(1948),thenbecamearegular,thefollowingyear,onTheFifty-FourthStreetRevue(1949),anotherTVserieswithabrieflife.ReinermadehisBroadwaydebutin1949inthemusical"InsideU.S.A.",ahitthatranfor399performances.HisnextBroadwayshow,the1950musicalrevue,"AliveandKicking",wasaflop,lastingjust43performances.MaxLiebman,theproducer/director/writer/composer,hadbeencalledintoprovideadditionalmaterialaftertheshow'stroubledsixweekout-of-townpreviewinBoston.Itdidn'thelp--theshowclosedaftersixweeksonBroadway--butanimportantcontacthadbeenmade.Leibmanwasaproducer-directoronYourShowofShows(1950),oneofthegreat
