EarlylifePhyllisAverywasborntoscreenwriterStephenMorehouseAveryandhiswifeEvelynMartineAvery.ShegrewupinFranceandLosAngeles.CareerAverycompletedhertrainingattheAmericanAcademyofDramaticArtsinNewYork.ShehadpreviouslymadeherBroadwaydebutinMay1937,withtheroleofGoldieinthemusicalOrchidsPreferred.In1940/1941sheappearedonBroadwayinthesuccessfulcomedyCharley'sAunt.SheplayedalongsideJoséFerrertheroleofAmySpettigue,oneoftheyoungnaivegirls.FromNovember1943toMay1944,sheplayedtheroleofDorothyRossonBroadwayinthemusicalplayWingedVictorybyMossHart,aproductionoftheUSArmyAirForces,inover200performances.OneofherpartnerswasactorDonTaylor,whomAverylatermarried.Averymadeherfilmdebutin1951withtheroleoftheyounggirlMarjorieinthefilmcomedyQueenforaDay.In1952,sheplayedtheroleofTracyMcAuliffe,thewifeofthemoviecharacterBoakeTackmanembodiedbyCharltonHeston,intheMGMfilmdramaRubyGentry.In1956,alongwithGordonMacRae,ErnestBorgnineandDanDailey,shewaspartofthecastforthemusicalTheBestThingsinLifeAreFree,afilmbiographyofthreecomposers.SheembodiedMargaretHenderson,thewifeofthemusicteacherandcomposerRayHenderson.Despiteafewmorefilmroles,Averyhasworkedprimarilyasatelevisionactresssincethe1950s.Shehasappearedincontinuousseriesroles,episoderolesandguestrolesinatotalofover40televisionseries.From1953to1955,sheembodiedPeggyMcNutley'swifeasRayMilland'swifeintheUSsitcomMeetMr.McNutley.From1960to1962shetookontheroleofAnneShelbyinsoapoperaTheClearHorizon;initsheplayedthewifeofaUSastronautstationedinCapeCanaveralAirForceStation,whowasattractedtoanotherman.
