Beautifulanddistinguished,exceptionallygifted(shecouldplaythepiano,dance,practiceskiingandunderwaterfishing,andofcourse...act!),DanielleGodethadeverythingforagreatcareer.Everythingbutluck,sinceforwantofopportunities,shefailedtoliveuptoher(numerous)capacities.BorninParison30-1927,thedaughterofanindustrialistandastay-at-homemother,passionateaboutpianoandclassicalmusic,Danielleinheritedherartisticflairfromthelatter.ThankstoMrs.Godet,thelittlegirlstudiedandpianoanddance,goingasfarastowinafirstprizeattheLéopoldBellanddancecontest.Butitwasthecallofthemoviesshewasactuallygoingtoheed.Herfirstcontactwiththeseventhartwasduetochance,asthesmallvillageinwhichDanielleandherparentsspenttheirSummerholidaysof1943harboredtheshootingofL'hommesansnom(1943),directedbyLéonMathot.Extraswereneededandtheprettysixteen-yearoldwasnoticedandhiredasone.Sometimelater,shetookdramalessonswithMariaVenturaandJeanMartinelli.HerfirstbreakcamewithRenéClairwhotestedherforManAboutTown(1947)butallshewasgivenwasabitasaspectator,thegreatFrenchdirectorhavingpreferredMarcelleDerrieninstead.Thesamemishapoccurredtohertwoyearslaterwhen,afterbeingconsideredbyHenri-GeorgesClouzotforManon(1949),shewasreplacedbyCécileAubry.In1947,though,shestarredalongsideabeginnernamedYvesMontandbutitwasinanindifferentandnowforgottenboxingmovie,TheIdol(1948).WhereshereallymadeanimpressionwasinHenriCalef'sSorceror(1950),alsoaforgotten(butmuchbetter)film.DanielleGodetshowedinthisnoirthriller(notunworthyofIConfess(1953))thatshecouldbegivenotherrolesthantheingénuesshehadplayeduntilthen.Itwasalsonicetoseeher,likeotherGallicbeautiessuchasAnneVernonandOdileVersois,appearinanEnglishmovieTheFightingPimpernel(1949).Butfromthenon,DanielleGodet'sartisticfallstartedanddespitehereffortstofindworthwhileroles,neverended.Inthebatch,thereareafewunpretentiousbutentertainingFrenchorSpanishBmovies(VotredévouéBlake(1954),TheVersaillesAffair(1960),Cuatroenlafrontera(1958),AutopsyofaCriminal(1963)...)butwhatalotofturkeyssignedMauricedeCanonge,HenriLepage,WalterKapps,GeorgesJafféorGianfrancoParolini.AfewcollaborationswithJean-PierreMocky,JeanDewever,MauroBolognini,JuanLuisBuñuel,barelysaveherhonor.WhatapityDanielleGodet'spathdidcrossthatofJeanRenoir,Jean-PierreMelville,ClaudeAutant-Lara,LouisMalle,JacquesBeckerandothersuchhighcalibernamesofFrenchcinema.Thiscommentwouldforsurehavebeenquitedifferent.
