ArsèneWengerOBE(Frenchpronunciation:[aʁsɛnvɛŋɡɛʁ];born22October1949)isaFrenchfootballmanagerandformerplayer.HehasbeenthemanagerofArsenalsinceOctober1996,wherehehassincebecometheclub'slongest-servingmanagerandmostsuccessfulintermsofmajortitleswon.InApril2018,heannouncedhisintentiontostepdownasArsenalmanagerattheendofthe2017–18season,afteralmost22yearsintherole.FootballpunditsgiveWengercreditforhiscontributiontotherevolutionizingoffootballinEnglandinthelate1990sthroughtheintroductionofchangesinthetraininganddietofplayers.WengerwasborninStrasbourgandraisedinDuttlenheim.Hewasintroducedtofootballbyhisfather,themanagerofthelocalvillageteam.Afteramodestplayingcareer,inwhichhemadeappearancesforseveralamateurclubs,Wengerobtainedamanager'sdiplomain1981.FollowinganunsuccessfulperiodatNancywhichculminatedinhisdismissalin1987,WengerjoinedASMonaco;theclubwontheleaguechampionshipin1988.In1991,WengerguidedMonacotovictoryintheCoupedeFrance,buttheirfailuretoregaintheleaguetitleinlaterseasonsledtohisdeparturefromtheclubbymutualconsentin1994.HebrieflycoachedJapaneseJ.LeaguesideNagoyaGrampusEight,whichwontheEmperor'sCupandJapaneseSuperCupduringhisstint.
