AsanadolescentHugoZempwantedtobecomeajazzmusician,andattheageof20enteredinathree-yearprogramofpercussionattheConservatoryofBasle,hishometowninSwitzerland.In1958,attheageof21,hetravelledtoCôted’IvoiretoexperienceAfricanpercussion.TherehemetAndréSchaeffner,thefatherofFrenchethnomusicologyfromtheMuséedel’HommeinParis,andhiswifeDenisePaulme,professorofanthropology.SeeingZemp’senthusiasmforAfricanmusic,theyinvitedhimtocometoParistostudy.Hefinishedhismusicalstudiesandbeganstudyinganthropology,linguisticandethnomusicologyinParis.Conductinghisfieldworkbetween1961and1967intheCôted’Ivoire,mostlyamongtheDanpeople,ZempwroteadoctoralthesisthatgarneredinterestamongFrench-andEnglish-speakingethnomusicologistsstudyingWestAfricanmusic.Healsomadeshorterstaysamongotherpeoplestodocumentandrecordtheirmusic,amongthesetheSenufo,whosebalafonmusicimpressedhimsomuchthathereturnedtoCôted’Ivoirefortyyearsafterhisfirstencountertomakethefour-filmseriesMastersoftheBalafon.In1967hebecameresearcherattheCNRS(CentreNationaldelaRechercheScientifique)attheEthnomusicologyDepartmentoftheMuséedel’Homme,inParis,whereheworkeduntilhisretirementin2004.AnimportanteventforZemp’sprofessionallifewasanencounterwithDanieldeCoppet,whosesoundrecordingsfromthe‘Are’arepeopleoftheSolomonIslandsalmostlethimforgetAfricanmusicforatime!HugoZempstartedanewfieldworkperiodin1969witha16mmcamera,makingallofthemistakesofabeginningfilmmaker.Zempbegantofindhiswayintoethnographicfilmmakingwiththehelpoffriendandethnographicfilmmaker,Jean-DominiqueLajoux,aswellasallofthebookshecouldfindondocumentaryfilmmakingandthefilmsofJeanRouch.AnestheticshockwaswatchingRouch’sfilmTourouetBitti,anine-minutesequenceshotonapossessionritualinNiger.ThisfilmandthewritingsofJeanRouchpersuadedhimthatlongtakeswithamovingcamera,andwithoutzooming,couldbetheidealstrategyforfilmingmusicinthefield.OnhissecondfieldtriptotheSolomonIslandsin1974,Zempmadethefilm‘Are’areMusictoshowthenativeclassificationofmusic,explainedbyamastermusician.Withitsrichnessofmusicaltypesandthebeautyofthepolyphonicinstrumentalandvocalmusicinthefilm,itwasandstillisanimportanteventforethnomusicologists.Zemp,though,remainedunsatisfiedwiththeartificialshootingtechniques(heurgedthemusiciantobeshortbecauseoflimitedfilmstock),andbecausemanymusicaltypeshadtobeshotoutofcontext.ZempwentontomakeaseriesoffourfilmsaboutthetraditionallocalyodellingofamountainvalleyinhishomecountrySwitzerland,learningfromwatchingDavidMcDougall’sfilmstousesubtitledconversationstotransmitverbalinformation.Nextwasafilmaboutovertoneorbi-phonicsinging,TheSongofHarmonics,whichshowedforthefirsttimesoundsynchronizedshotsofx-rayandofspectralanalyses.AttheinvitationofGeorgiananthropologistsmetatafilmfestivalinEstonia,heshothistwofirstvideosintheGeorgianCaucasusin1991andthenreturningtohisfirstlove,Africanmusic,hemadehisseriesonSenufobalafons,andtwofilmsonurbanmusicofCôted’Ivoire.Besideshismanypublications,18recordeddiscsandpositionasthegeneraleditoroftherecordseries“CollectionCNRS/Muséedel’Homme”,ZemphaswrittenseveralarticlesonfilmingmusicandtaughtanalysisandproductionofethnomusicologicalfilmsattheUniversityofParisX-Nanterre.HehaspresentedhisworkatmanyethnomusicologyconferencesanduniversitiesinEuropeandAmerica,andmanyofhisfilmshavereceivedawardsatinternationalfestivals.
