Actor,singer,director,screenwriter.OneofthemostpopularartistsoftheinterwarperiodPolishcinemaandentertainmenttheatre.Bornon28thDecember1899,diedon7thOctober1943.Bodo'sactualnamewasEugeneBogdanJunod.Hisfather,TeodorJunod,organisedpartiesinŁódź(aswellasanestablishedthefirstcinemainthecity,Urania).HewasaSwissandamemberoftheEvangelicalReformedChurch.Bodo'smother,Dorota,néeDylewska,wasofaristocraticdescent.BodoowedhisFrenchsurnameandSwisscitizenshiptohisfather.Hehadhadtwopassportstilltheendofhislife,whichwaslatertocontributetothetragicdeathoftheartistin1943.AnotherthingBodo'sfatherpassedontohissonwasanaturalaptitudeforbusinesswhich–exceptforhisartistictalent–allowedhimtobecomeoneofthemostfamousandrichestPolishactors.TheatreBodostartedhiscareerinthetheatresofŁódźrunbyhisfather.Asafive-year-old,heshowedoffbycowboy-dancing,holdingarevolverandawhip.However,hisparentsintendedanother,saferandmorestablelifepathfortheirson.Theydreamedthathewouldbecomeadoctor.Theirexpectationsnevercametrue.Eighteen-year-oldBogdanEugeniuszranawayfromhomeandengagedinApollotheatreoperatinginPoznań.Hispovertydidn'tallowhimtocreatehisownrepertoire(itwasatimewhenartistswouldbuysongsandtextsfromauthors),sotheyoungactorwouldexploittheexistingrepertory,whichdidn'tstophimfromachievinghisfirstsuccessesandleavingtothecapital,Warsaw.InWarsaw,hedebutedin1919inSfinksTheatre,whereheperformedunderhisrealsurname,Junod.AfterseveralmonthshemovedontoBagatelatheatreandstartedusinghispseudonym,Bodo,createdbycombininghisnamewithhismother'sname.Hisfirstsuccessescamein1921inQuiProQuoTheatre,whichwasatruebreedinggroundformanytalents.ItwasatthistimethatZulaPogorzelskaandMiraZimińskastartedtheircareersinthesametheatre.BododebutedintheoperettaAmerykanka[editor'stranslation:TheAmerican]tothemusicofZygmuntWiehlerandlibrettobyAndrzejWłast.ItwasOctober1921.BodowasassociatedwithQuiProQuotill1925,atthesametimesporadicallyactinginothertheatres.In1925BodoandagroupofotheractorsleftQuiProQuoforthePerskieOkotheatre,whichwasfocusedonrevuesandwasclearlymoreappropriateforBodo'sartistictemperament.Heworkedthereupuntilthetheatrewascloseddown.InthefollowingyearsheperformedinMorskieOkotheatre(alegendaryplace,dubbed'aPolishrevueParisianstyle'),CyganeriaTheatre,CyrulikWarszawskiTheatre,andWielkaRewiaTheatre.ThelasttheatrehewasassociatedbeforetheoutbreakWorldWarIIbrokeoutwasTip-Top,openinlateJulyof1939.FilmBodoalsobuilthiscareerusingthemagicofcinema.Hedebutedin1925inRywale[Rivals],andwhenthesounderaofcinemareachedPoland,hewasoneofthemostfamousstars.Heeagerlyperformedinmusicfilmsandsangsongsthatarerememberedtillthisday.OneofthemostfamousmoviesstarringBodowasPiętroWyżej[OneStoreyUp].Bodowrotethescript,andthewayheinterpretedthesongSexAppeal,dressedasMaeWest,waswaybeforehistime,thirtyyearspriortothecross-dressingknownfromtheiconicAmericanfilmSomeLikeItHot.Bodoalsoperformedrolesoutsideofhisstandardrevuerepertoire.Hewasexcellentatcreatingcharactersfromthemarginsofsociety.InSkłamałam[ILied],afilmdirectedbyMichałKrawicz,hecreatedaconvincingportraitofapander,usingthenaivetyofthemaincharacterperformedbyJadwigaSmosarska.Inthelastfilmheperformedin(anddirectedhimself)–the1938pictureZaWinyNiepopełnione[ForSinsUncommitted]–hecreatedapersuasiveblackcharacterwhowasruiningthelifeofhiscoworker(performedbyKazimierzJunosza-Stępowski).ThefilmprovedBodohadthepotentialofbecomingaverygooddramaticactor.HewasalsoengagedincreatingthePolishentertainmentindustry–Bodorantwofilmsstudios.SeveralmonthsbeforetheoutbreakofWorldWarIIheestablishedaluxuriouscafé,calledCafé-Bodo.DandyRightbeforetheoutbreakofWorldWarIIBodowasatthepeakofhispopularity.Hisdancingskillsandstagetemperamentgrantedhimfameamongwomen.HishugeincomeslethimbecameoneofthemostelegantmeninWarsaw.Thankstohisinfluenceoncontemporaryfashion,tweedjacketsfromtheluxuryshopOldEnglandbecamepopular.Hisprivatelifeexcitedthegossipers,especiallyhislongromancewiththefilmstarNoraNeyandaloveadventurewiththeTahitiandancerandsingerReri,forwhomhewrotethescriptofCzarnaPerła[BlackPearl,1934],thefilmdirectedbyMichałWaszyński.TheromancewithReriendedafterafewmonths.Oneofthereasonswasallegedlythedancer'slikingforalcohol(Bodohimselfdidn'tdrink).However,thelegendhasitthatReriwaspreytothePolishactor'sunfaithfulness.VictimofStalinismThebiographyofthesuccessfulactorendedtragically.Bodowas,withoutdoubt,oneofthemostsorrowfulfiguresofPolishinterwarperiodtheatre.AfterWorldWarIIbrokeoutinSeptember1939,Bodowenttotheeast.HearrivedatLviv,wherehestartedparticipatingintheatricalperformancestakingplaceinStylowycinema(alongsidewithGwidonBorucki,FeliksKonarski,AdamAstronandMieczysławFogg).InOctober1939hebeganco-operationwithatheatricalgrouprunbyKonradTom,togetherwithactorshepreviouslyworkedwithintheatresinWarsaw.InDecember1939,theSovietauthoritiesallowedforthefunctioningofonlytwotheatresandthreeorchestrasinLviv.OneoftheorchestraswascalledTea-Jazz.Bodostartedperformingwiththem,singingbothinPolishandRussian.Therecordingsregisteringtheperformancesareatruerarityforcollectorsnowadays.Bodowas,however,tryingtoleaveSovietRussia,hopingthattheSwissembassyandhisSwisscitizenshipwouldhelphim.ForseveraldecadesafterWorldWarII,thelasttwoyearsofBodo'slifewereshreddedinmystery.Itwasaslateas1973thatitwasbelievedhewaskilledbytheNazis.Itlaterturnedoutthathewasactuallyarrestedin1941bythePeople'sCommissariatforInternalAffairs,thelawenforcementagencyoftheSovietUnion.HewasaccusedofespionageandkeptinaprisoninMoscow.Depressionandterribleconditionshewasheldinduringthetwoyearscompletelyruinedtheactor.EugeniuszBododiedwhilehewasbeingtransportedtooneoftheSovietlabourcamps.Hisbodywasburiedinamassgrave.
