BorninPasadena,California,onOctober9,1921,actorGeorgeNadergraduatedfromOccidentalCollegewithaB.A.intheaterartsbeforejoiningtheNavyduringWorldWarII.Uponreturninghomeafterthewar,NaderactedinstageplaysinsouthernCalifornia.By1950,hestartedgettingsmall,uncreditedrolesinfilmsandalsoactedinearlytelevision.HishandsomevisagewashistickettoaUniversalStudioscontractbythemid1950s,wherehemadeanumberoffilms.However,hisfirststarringrolecameintheformoftheindependent1953flickRobotMonster,a3-DfeaturedirectedbyPhilTucker.RobotMonsterfeaturesGeorgeBarrowsasthemonster,wearingamonkeysuitwithadivingbell.Tucker'sopuswasproducedfor$16,000(fantasticallycheapevenin1953)andwasshotentirelyoutdoorsinfourdaysinBronsonCanyon,eastofLosAngeles.Althoughheraldedasoneoftheworstfilmsofalltime,itwasthefirstsciencefictionfilmreleasedwithstereophonicsound.Duringitsinitialrun,RobotMonstermademorethan$1million,mostlyduetothenoveltyofthe3-Dprocess.Fromthe1950sthroughthemid1960s,NadermadenumerousfilmsandtelevisionappearancesinAmerica.AftersecuringacontractwithUniversal,hewona1955GoldenGlobeawardfor"MostPromisingNewcomer."However,withthedeathofthestudiosysteminthelate1950s,Nader'scontractwithUniversal-Internationallapsed.Afterward,hebegandoingquiteabitofworkintelevision.Inthemid1960s,withNader'scareerebbing,hewenttoGermanytostarasFBIagentJerryCottoninastringonJamesBond-themedfilms.ThesemoviesprovedhighlypopularinEuropeandrevivedNader'sactingcareer.
