MonikaTreut(bornApril6,1954,inMönchengladbach,NorthRhine-Westphalia,Germany)isaGermanlesbianfilmmaker.[1]Sheattendedhighschoolatanall-girlsstateschool.ShestudiedGermanandPoliticalScienceatuniversity.ShewroteherPhDthesisaboutTheCruelWoman:FemaleImagesintheWritingofMarquisdeSadeandLeopoldvonSacher-Masoch.[2]Afterpassingthestateexaminationshegraduatedin1978.Duringherstudiesatuniversityinthemid-1970sshebeganworkingwithvideo.SheworkedasamediaassociateinMarburg,Frankfurt,andBerlin.In1984,TreutearnedherdoctoratedegreeinphilologyfromtheUniversityofMarburg.ThatsameyearshefoundedHyenaFilmproduktiontogetherwithElfiMikesch,andbeganproducing,writing,anddirectingindependentfeaturefilms.ThefollowingyearTreutmadeherfeaturefilmdebutwithSeduction:TheCruelWoman,afilmthatexploredsadomasochisticsexpractices.TreutalsospenttimeinAmericaduringthe1980s.TravelingandworkinginSanFranciscoandNewYorkCity,TreutmetandworkedwithAnnieSprinkleandWernerSchroeter,whilealsoproducingsomeofherownfilms.TheserelationshipsledtothefilmsAnnie(documentaryshort),MyFatherisComingandEncounterwithWernerSchroeter(documentaryshort).Famousforherqueerfilms,Treutalsomakesdocumentaries.Herfilmshaveexploredmanyinterestsaroundtheworld.Thesubjectmattervariesfromfilmtofilm;whetherqueer-themed,oraboutonewoman'seffortstohelpstreetkidsinRiodeJaneiro,orabouttheculinaryartsofTaiwan—herdocumentariesfindinteresting,realpeopletofocuson.ThroughoutherfilmcareerTreuthasbeeninvolvedinseveralaspectsoffilmmaking,includingacting,directing,producing,writing,filming,andediting.Herfilmcatalogueincludesover20films,bothinhernativelanguageGermanandinEnglish.[
