ShempwasbornSamuelHorwitzinBrooklyn,NewYorkonMarch17,1895.Heacquiredthename"Shemp"whenhismother,withherbroadEuropeanaccent,wouldcallhim"Sam,"whichsoundedlike"Shemp."ShempgraduatedfromP.S.163inBrooklyn.ShempenrolledalongwithMoeattheBaronDeHirschTradeSchoolinNewYorkwhereShemptookupplumbingandMoestudiedtobeanelectrician. Shemp,likehisbrotherMoe,hadambitionstobeanentertainer.ShempworkedwithhisbrotherMoeinvariousamateurandvaudevilleactsuntil1922whenaformerschoolmateandvaudevillecomedian,TedHealy,wasplayingattheBrooklynprospecttheaterandneededareplacementinhiscurrentact.MoeandShempjoinedtheact.In1925ShempmarriedGertrude"Babe"Frank.Shegavebirthtoason,Morton,in1927. InthatsameyearLarryjoinedMoeandShempwithTedHealy.In1930,ShempwentwithHealyandMoeandLarrytoco-starin"SouptoNuts."Ashorttimelater,HealylefttheJJShubertBroadwayreview,takingMoeandLarrywithhim.Shempdecidedtostaywiththeshow.Onhisown,ShempwentontostarincountlesscomediesforVitaphonein1932,andhelaterplayedtheroleofKnobbyWalshintheJoePalookaseries.ShempdidfeaturefilmrolesatRKO,MGM,andMonogram. Inthe1940'shewasgivennumerousrolesinsuchUniversalfilmsas"BuckPrivates,""TheBankDick,"and"Hellzapoppin!"AfterCurlyhadtoleavetheactbecauseofhisillness,ShempbecomeoneofTheThreeStooges.Shempnotonlymade77Stoogeshorts,butalsoafeaturefilm,"GoldRaiders"(1951).ShempalsoappearedintheTVpilot"JerksofAllTrades." OnNovember23,1955,ShempwentoutwithhisfriendstoaboxingmatchattheHollywoodLegionStadium.Afterthefightswereover,ShemphailedataxicabtotakehimtohisNorthHollywoodhomewithfriendAlWinston.Shempsetbackandlituphiscigar.SuddenlyheslumpedoverintoWinston'slap.Shemphadaheartattackandwasdeadattheageof60.
