BorninNewYorkCity,JamieGillistrainedasalegitimateactor.Intheearly1970shedriftedintoperforminginpornographicfilms,andcontinuedtoworkinthatfieldthroughthelate1990s.Despitetheoccasionalforayinto"legitimate"film,suchasacameoinNighthawks(1981),Gillisremainedidentifiedwiththepornindustry,andisregardedasoneofitsmostprolificandpotentactors.Afterastintasoneofthe"NastyBros".inproducerEdPowers'seriesofamateur"DirtyDebutantes"series,Gillisbeganbranchingouttoproducehomemadepornvideosofhisown,someofthemmadeinFrance(wherehewasabletoshowoffhiscommandoftheFrenchlanguage).Neverhavingmadeasecretofhisbisexuality,Gillismadehisfirstall-gaypornfilmin1997,asado-masochisticvideoinwhichhedidnotactuallyperformsexacts,butratherissuedorderstotheothermembersofthecast.Hewasappearinginoff-BroadwayplaysanddrivingcabswhenheansweredanadintheVillageVoicefornudemodeling,beginninghisadultcareer.Duringhissexshowsinthe1970s,hereadpoetryandrecitedtheworksofWilliamShakespearesotheshowswouldbesociallyredeemingandnotbebustedbythepolice.The"OnTheLookout"segmentinBoogieNights(1997)wasbasedonGillis'pioneeringadultvideoseriesthatbeganwithOntheProwl(1989).GraduatedfromColumbiaUniversityin1970.Ranked#12inThe50TopPornStarsofAllTime(AdultVideoNews-January2002).
