JohnSteiner(7January1941–31July2022)wasanEnglishactor.Tall,thinandgaunt,heattendedtheRoyalAcademyofDramaticArtandperformedon-stagefortheRoyalShakespeareCompany,butwasbestknowntoaudiencesforhisrolesinItalianfilms,severalofwhichbecamecultclassics.EarlylifeandactingcareerSteinerwasborninChester,CheshireonJanuary7,1941.HeattendedtheRoyalAcademyofDramaticArtandjoinedtheRoyalShakespeareCompany.HeactedintheroleofMonsieurDupereinPeterBrook'sproductionofMarat/Sade.HereprisedtherolewhentheplaywastransferredtoBroadway,andagainforthe1967filmadaptation.HefoundworkprimarilyinfilmsincludingandtheoriginalBedazzled(1967)withPeterCookandDudleyMoore.In1969,SteinerwashiredtoplayapartintheSpaghettiWesternTepepa,andalsoappearedoppositeFrancoNeroinWhiteFang,directedbyLucioFulci.In1971hestarredinthetelevisionseriesHine.In1979hefeaturedintheleadingroleofLeoinatelevisionproductionofDesignforLivingbyNoëlCoward.HefoundhimselfindemandinItalyandmovedthere,appearinginagreatnumberofItalianexploitationandB-filmsincludingpoliceactioners(ViolentRome),westerns(Mannaja),warfilms(TheLastHunter),nazisploitation(DeportedWomenoftheSSSpecialSection),sci-fiadventurefilms(Yor,theHunterfromtheFuture),andhorrorfilms,suchasMarioBava'sShock,DarioArgento'sTenebrae,andRuggeroDeodato'sBodyCount.HealsobecameafavouriteoffamedItalianfilmmakerTintoBrass,featuringinSalonKitty,theinfamousCaligula,Action,andPaprika.Heremainedinsteadydemanduntilthelate1980s.RetirementandlaterlifeAstheItalianfilmindustrydwindled,Steinerretiredfromactingin1991andmovedtoCalifornia,wherehebecameasuccessfulrealestateagent.SteinerlatercontributedtoDVDextrasonsomeofhisfilmsandgaveinterviewsabouthisItalianwork.PersonallifeSteinerwasbisexual.Duringthe1960shewasinalong-termrelationshipwithdirectorJohnSchlesingerandbecamethebasisforthecharacterBobElkin(playedbyMurrayHead)inSchlesinger'ssemi-autobiographicalfilmSundayBloodySunday.Helatermarried,andissurvivedbyhiswifeofover30yearsInadditiontoEnglish,SteinerspokeFrench,Italian,andGerman.DeathSteinerdiedinacarcrashinLaQuinta,Californiaon31July2022,attheageof81.
