MarcSmerlingproducedandshot"TheJinx:TheLifeandDeathsofRobertDurst",a"groundbreaking"seriesonHBOabouttheheirtoaManhattanrealestatefortunesuspectedofthreemurdersoverthirtyyears.Smerlingwroteandproduced"AllGoodThings"(2010),starringRyanGosling,FrankLangella,andKirstenDunst.Mr.GoslingplayedtheroleofRobertDurstandafterseeingthefilm,theRealEstateSciondecidedtositwiththefilmmakersforanextensiveinterviewabouthislife.This23-hourinterviewisthebasisfor"TheJinx."Smerlingproduced"Catfish,"a2011documentaryfeatureabouttheperilsofsocialnetworking."Catfish"spawnedthetelevisionseries"CatfishTV,"currentlyinitssixthseasononMTVasoneofcable'shighestratedoriginalprograms.Heproducedandshotmuchof"CapturingtheFriedmans,"(2003)winneroftheGrandJuryPrizeattheSundanceFilmFestivalandnominatedforanAcademyAwardforBestDocumentary.SmerlingisapartnerinHitTheGroundRunningFilms,atelevision&motionpicturedevelopmentandproductioncompanylocatedinNewYorkCity.Beforethat,hewasfounderandexecutiveproducerofNotoriousPictures,aproductioncompanywithofficesinNewYorkandLosAngeles.There,heproducedanddirectedtelevisioncommercialsandmusicvideosandconcertfilmsformusiciansasdiverseasTheFugees,Santana,POD,SarahMcLachlan,WyclefJean,DianaKingandSlipknot,aswellasdocumentaries,animatedandrealityseriesforbroadcast.Hewastheassociateproducerof"Gangs,CopsandDrugs"and"TheNewHollywood"withTomBrokawforNBC.HeworkedasanewspaperreporterinUpstateNewYork.Heisa1985graduateofSyracuseUniversity'sNewhouseSchoolofJournalismanda1989graduateofUSC'sSchoolofCinema-Television,wherehisthesisfilm,"DrivingTheAmericanDream,"wonaFOCUSaward.There,heearnedaMastersInFilmProduction.
