MaryMcGuckian(born27May1963)isafilmdirector,producerandscreenwriterfromNorthernIreland.Herinterestintheatreandpoliticsledhertofollowanautodidacticpostgraduateeducationinliterature,theatre,actinganddirectingonvariouscoursesinLondon,ParisandItaly.Duringwhichtimeshewroteanumberofavant-gardeplaysandmovementpieceswhichwerevariouslyproducedinEnglandandIreland.Mostacclaimedwasprobablyherlong-runningstageadaptationofBrianMerriman'spoem,"TheMidnightCourt".ReturningtoIreland,shecontinuedtoworkasanactorandplaywrightuntilinvitedtowritescreenplaysbyvariousproducersintheemergentIrishfilmindustryoftheearly1990s.Atthispoint,shesetupherowncompany,PembridgeProductions,todevelopandproducefeaturefilmprojects.Thecompanywasactiveasaco-produceronmanyIrishfeaturefilmsandalsoproducedthreepictureswhichshewroteanddirected.WordsUpontheWindowPane,(adaptedfromtheplaybyWBYeats),ThisIstheSea,(anadaptationofherownplay'Hazel'andBest,(thelifestoryofNorthernIrishfootballerGeorgeBest);allessentiallyIrishsubjectsrootedinherculturalheritage.In2001,sheestablishedPembridgePicturesintheUKtodevelopandfinanceaslateofpicturesforalong-terminternationalproductionstrategybyaccessingUKtax-incentivebasedfundinginco-productionwithtreatypartnersoftheUKsuchastheEUtreatycountriesandCanada.ThefirstofthesetocommenceprincipalphotographywasheradaptationoftheThorntonWilderclassic,TheBridgeofSanLuisRey,deliveredinMay2004,whichshotinSpain.Morelately,shehasturnedherinterestandattentiontotheexplorationofinnovativefilm-makingtechniquesaimedatintegratingamorecollaborativestyleofproductioninordertoprioritizeperformancevalueswiththeaimofmakingcontemporarydramamorecompellingtoaudiences.Usingacombinationofmodernscripts
