SirPeterReginaldFrederickHall,CBE(22November1930–11September2017),wasanEnglishtheatre,operaandfilmdirector.HisobituaryinTheTimesdeclaredhim"themostimportantfigureinBritishtheatreforhalfacentury"andonhisdeath,aRoyalNationalTheatrestatementdeclaredthatHall's"influenceontheartisticlifeofBritaininthe20thcenturywasunparalleled".In1955,HallintroducedLondonaudiencestotheworkofSamuelBeckettwiththeUKpremiereofWaitingforGodot.HallfoundedtheRoyalShakespeareCompany(1960–68)andwentontobuildaninternationalreputationintheatre,opera,filmandtelevision.HewasdirectoroftheNationalTheatre(1973–88)andartisticdirectorofGlyndebourneFestivalOpera(1984–1990).HeformedthePeterHallCompany(1998–2011)andbecamefoundingdirectoroftheRoseTheatreKingstonin2003.Throughouthiscareer,hewasatenaciouschampionofpublicfundingforthearts.[1][2]
