FrancoManninowasanItalianfilmcomposer,pianist,operadirector,playwrightandnovelist,borninPalermo.Hemadehisdebutaspianistattheageof16.HeconductedtheNationalArtsCentreOrchestrainCanadabetween1982and1986,amongtheothers.Inallhewrotemorethan440compositionsincludingopera,ballet,oratorios,symphonies,chambermusicandmusicforthetheatre.Inadditiontherewashismusicformorethanahundredfilmsbysomeofthebest-knowndirectorsofhisday,includingLuchinoViscontiwithwhomhecollaboratedmanytimes,includingsuchfilmsasDeathinVenice.His1963operaIldiavoloingiardino,fromalibrettobyVisconti(andcollaborators)basedonaThomasMannshortstory,waspresentedattheTeatroMassimoinPalermoinFebruary.Anotherofhisworks,whichViscontidirected,wastheballetMarioeilMagoin1956.HediedinRomein2005.
