MorrisMikeMedavoy(bornJanuary21,1941)isanAmericanfilmproducerandexecutive,co-founderofOrionPictures(1978),formerchairmanofTriStarPictures,formerheadofproductionforUnitedArtists(1974–1978)andcurrentchairmanandCEOofPhoenixPictures.EarlylifeandcareerMedavoywasbornin1941,inShanghai,China.HisfatherwasagaragemechanicandhismotherhadadressshopforChineseactresses.HisparentswerebothfromJewishfamilies,withhismotherhavingbeenborninHarbin,Manchuria(toparentsfromOdessa)andhisfatherintheUkraine.MedavoylivedinChilefrom1947to1957,wherehelearnedtospeakSpanishfluently.[citationneeded]HegraduatedfromUCLAin1963.MedavoybeganhiscareeratUniversalStudiosin1964.In1965hebecameanagentattheGeneralArtistCorporationandlatermovingintothevicepresidentpositionoftheCreativeManagementAgency.TheNewHollywoodLaterhejoinedCreativeManagementasitsvicepresidentofthemotionpicturedepartmentin1967.There,heworkedwithStevenSpielbergandFrancisFordCoppolaamongstothersandheadedtoIFAin1970.In1974,UnitedArtistsbroughtMedavoyinasseniorvicepresidentofproduction.There,hewaspartoftheteamresponsibleforOneFlewOvertheCuckoo'sNest,Rocky,andAnnieHall,whichwonbestPicturesOscars®in1975,1976and1977respectively.UnitedArtistsmadeanumberofothernotablefilmsatthetime,includingApocalypseNow,RagingBull,NetworkandComingHome.OrionPicturesIn1978,Medavoyco-foundedOrionPictures.Duringhistenurethere,OrionreleasedfilmssuchnotableandsuccessfulfilmsasPlatoon,Amadeus,Robocop,HannahandHerSisters,TheTerminator,DanceswithWolves,andTheSilenceoftheLambs.TriStarPicturesIn1990,MedavoybecamethechairmanofTriStarPictureswhereheoversawreleaseoffilmssuchasPhiladelphia,Terminator2:JudgmentDay,SleeplessinSeattle,Cliffhanger,TheFisherKing,LegendsoftheFallandHook.PhoenixPicturesIn1995,Medavoyco-foundedPhoenixPictures.AsitschairmanandCEO,MikehelpedproducefilmssuchasThePeoplevs.LarryFlint,TheMirrorHasTwoFaces,UTurn,AptPupil,TheThinRedLine,The6thDay,Basic,Holes,AlltheKing'sMen,Zodiac,PathfinderandMissPotter,amongothers.TheThinRedLineandThePeoplevs.LarryFlinteachreceivedOscarnominations.Mostrecently,PhoenixPictureshasproducedShutterIslandandBlackSwan.ShutterIslandwasreleasedonFebruary19,2010,earningover$42millionitsopeningweekend.BlackSwanwasdirectedbyDarrenAronofskyandwonnumerousawardsincludingtheOscar®andGoldenGlobeforBestActress(NataliePortman).In2011,Medavoyannouncedhisnewestprojectsurroundingthe2010Chileanminingaccidentthatleft33mentrappedundergroundfor69days.MedavoywillcollaboratewithChileanofficialsandAcademyAward-nominatedscreenwriterJoséRiveratocreateanauthenticretellingofthisstorythat,asMedavoyexplains,“atitsheart,[is]aboutthetriumphofthehumanspiritandatestamenttothecourageandperseveranceoftheChileanpeople”.Alsoin2011,MedavoyannouncedhiscollaborationwithTheShanghaiFilmGrouptocreatebothafeaturefilmandsix-hourminiseries.Thefeature,anadaptationofthenovelTheCursedPiano,isalovestorysetinJapanese-occupiedChinaconcerningprosecutedJewsseekingrefugefromanoccupiedEurope.Themini-series,TearsofaSparrow,willfocusingreaterdetailontheexperienceoftheseJewsinShanghai.
