ClarenceAaronRobbins(1888–1949)knownprofessionallyasTodRobbinswasanAmericanauthorofhorrorandmysteryfiction,particularlynovelsandshortstorycollections.RobbinsattendedWashingtonandLeeUniversity(Lexington,Virginia)and—alongwithMarkW.Sheafe(1884?–1949)andThorntonWhitneyAllen(1890–1944)—wrotethecollegesong"WashingtonandLeeSwing."Sheafewrotethetunein1905,Allensetthemusicdownonpaperin1909andRobbinsprovidedthewords.Thecompletedversionwaspublishedin1910.Robbinsauthoredtwoshortstorycollectionsandseveralnovels.Hisworkoftencontainsbizarreandfrighteningplots,sometimesinfluencedbywriterslikeOscarWilde(Robbins'"TheLivingPortrait"isahomagetoThePictureofDorianGray)[1]andRobertW.Chambers.[2]Robbins'sMysteriousMartin(1912)isanearlynovelaboutaserialkiller.[1]HisnovelTheUnholyThree(1917)wastwiceadaptedforthescreen,asilentversiondirectedbyTodBrowningin1925andasoundversiondirectedbyJackConwayin1930;bothadaptationsstarredLonChaney.Robbinswasalsotheauthoroftheshortstory"Spurs",whichBrowningusedasthebasisforFreaks(1932),afilmwhichlaterdevelopedacultfollowing.[1]SomeofRobbins'sworkwaslaterreprintedinthe"Creeps"seriesofhorroranthologieseditedbyCharlesBirkin.
