MaxReinhardt(September9,1873–October30,1943)wasanAustrian-borntheatreandfilmdirector,intendant,andtheatricalproducer.Withhisinnovativestageproductions,heisregardedasoneofthemostprominentdirectorsofGerman-languagetheatreintheearly20thcentury.In1920,heestablishedtheSalzburgFestivalwiththeperformanceofHugovonHofmannsthal'sJedermann.ReinhardtwasbornMaximilianGoldmanninthespatownofBadennearVienna,thesonofWilhelmGoldmann(1846–1911),aJewishmerchantfromStomfa,Hungary,andhiswifeRachelLeaRosi"Rosa"Goldmann(néeWengraf)(1851–1924).Havingfinishedschool,hebegananapprenticeshipatabank,butalreadytookactinglessons.In1890,hegavehisdebutonaprivatestageinViennawiththestagenameMaxReinhardt(possiblyaftertheprotagonistReinhardWernerinTheodorStorm'snovellaImmensee).In1893heperformedatthere-openedSalzburgCityTheatre.[1]Oneyearlater,ReinhardtrelocatedtoGermany,joiningtheDeutschesTheaterensembleunderdirectorOttoBrahminBerlin.In1918ReinhardtpurchasedSchlossLeopoldskroncastleinSalzburg,whichhadfallenintodisrepair.Whilelivinginitfornearly20years,hepainstakinglyrestoredthecastle;howeverhefledduetotheNazis'increasinganti-Semiticaggressions.ThecastlewasseizedfollowingGermany'sAnschlussannexationofAustriain1938.Afterthewar,thecastlewasrestoredtoReinhardt'sheirs,andsubsequentlythehomeandgroundsbecamefamousasthefilmingsitefortheearlyscenesoftheVonTrappfamilygardensinthemovieTheSoundofMusic.
