ErichLøchen(b.1924-d.1983)wasawriter,director,editorandprofessionaljazzmusician.Hestartedhiscareerinfilmintheearlyfiftiesmakingdocumentaryshorts.Hewasoneoftheco-foundersoftheproductioncompanyABC-FilmA/Sin1950,andmademostofhisfilms(includingcommercialadvertisingfilms)throughthecompany.LøchenmadehisfeaturefilmdebutwiththedramaTheHuntin1959.ThefilmwasheavilyinfluencedbythenarrativeanddramaturgicaltheoriesofBertoltBrecht,andwasanunconventionalandsomewhatexperimentalfilminthemodernistvein,makingLøchenapioneerinNorwegiancinemahistory,andoneofitstruemodernists.Hissecondfeature,Motforestilling(translatesas"Expostulation")from1972wasanevenmoreexperimentalfilm,withclearpoliticalundertones.Experimentingwithnon-linearstorytelling,Løchenconstructedthefilmsothat,tochallengeconventionalstorytelling,onecouldshoweachofthefiveseparateactsofthefilminanyorder,therebypresentingafilmthatcouldbeviewedin120differentways-andassuchalsoappearas120differentfilms.Thefilmhaslaterbeencalledastudyintwistingofnarrativelevelsandcirculartime.Inadditiontohisownfilms,LøchenalsowrotethescreenplaysforthefilmsKnutFormossistejakt(literaltranslation:KnutFormo'sfinalHunt,1973)andFabel(1980),bothdirectedbyhisfriendJanErikDüring.From1981untilhispassingin1983LøchenalsoservedasartisticdirectorforthenationalproductioncompanyNorskFilmA/S.
