YangYong-hi(ヤン・ヨンヒ)isaJapanese-bornKorean(orZainichi)filmdirector.YangYong-hiisasecond-generationKoreanresidentwhowasborninOsaka,Japanon11November1964.ShebelongstotheethnicKoreanminoritycommunityinJapan,manyofthemdescendantsofKoreansbroughtthereduringJapan's1910-1945colonialruleofKorea.YangstudiedattheKoreaUniversityinTokyoandNewSchoolUniversity,whereshegainedamaster'sinmediastudies.Sheisfluentinthreelanguages.HerfameddocumentaryDearPyongyangpickeduptheJurySpecialawardattheWorldCinemasectionfordocumentariesatthe2006SundanceFilmFestival,andtheNETPACAwardatthe56thBerlinInternationalFilmFestival.Shebaseditonherdualidentityandthedifficultrelationshipwithherfather.Yang'sfatherwasaninfluentialmemberoftheGAKR(GeneralAssociationofKoreanResidentsinJapan,or"Chongryon")--acontroversialorganizationinTokyothatostensiblyhelpsNorthKoreansinJapanwithtravelorlegalproblems,oractsasapipelinebetweenNorthKoreaandtheirfamiliesinthearchipelago.Sheandherfatherhadpassionatepoliticalargumentsovertheyears.[1]
