ThemanwhorevolutionizedTamil-languagecinema,ManiRatnamisthebiggestdirectorinsouthIndiaandoneofthemostrespecteddirectorsinallofIndia.Eachofhisfilmscontainitsownuniquestyle,withbeautifullyphotographedsongsanduniqueback-lighting.However,hisfilmscontainsubstanceaswellasstyle--Ratnamhasdealtwithawidevarietyoftopics,fromtheclassicIndianlovestorytopoliticalthrillers.HewasborninMadrasin1956.Filmmakingwasinhisblood;hewasthesonoffilmproducer'VenusGopalratnam'andhisbrotherwasG.Venkateswaran,afilmdistributorturnedproducer.Ironically,however,hestudiedatMadrasUniversityandreceivedamanagementdegreeattheJamnalalBajajInstituteofManagementStudiesinMumbai,andhadinitiallystartedoutasamanagementconsultant.Hisfirstfilm,PallaviAnuPallavi(1983),starringAnilKapoor,didn'tmakemanywaves,althoughitwontheStateAwardfromKarnatakathatyear,buteventhoughhemadetwofilmsinTamilandoneinMalayalam,nothingworkedforhimuntilhebrokethroughwithMounaRagam(1986).StarringRevathy,thefilmtoldthetaleofawomanwho,althoughforcedintoanarrangedmarriage,choosestomaintainaplatonicrelationshipwithherhusband.Thefilmwasnotedforitssophisticatedapproachandexecutionofanextremelysensitivetopic.Hisnextfilm,Nayakan(1987),wasalsoarguablyhisgreatest.Atake-offonFrancisFordCoppola'legendaryTheGodfather(1972),itestablishedRatnamastheleadingdirectorofTamil-languageCinemaandwonitsleadingactorKamalHaasantheNationalAwardforBestActor.Thefilmdrawson30yearsofTamilNadu'scelebrityimagesanddirectlyplayedtotheanti-HindifeelingsofTamilNaduwhentheprotagonist,beatenup,tellstheHindipolicemaninBombay,"IfIeverhityou,youwilldie!"
