In1977RachidNougmanovgraduatedfromanarchitecturalinstitute.In1984heenteredtheVGIKMoscowFilmInstitute.HisfirstfeatureTheNeedle(1988)initiatedwhatwastobecomeincinematichistory:the'KazakhNewWave'.ClaimingrecognitionabroadatfestivalsincludingBerlin,TorontoandSundance,thefilmtookFirstPrizeatNurembergandwasreleasedintheUSSRwith1,000printsincirculation(theresultingboxofficenumber-over30millionadmissions).Thefilm'sstar,VictorTsoi,wasvotedBestActoroftheYear1989bythenationalpress.From1989to1992,NougmanovservedasPresidentoftheUnionofKazakhFilmmakers.In1992-1993,hewrote,directedandproducedTheWildEast,whichwoninternationalacclaiminvenuesspanningfromVenicetoLosAngelestoTokyo,andwashonoredinValenciennes,FrancewiththePrixSpecialduJury.Since1993RachidNougmanovresidesinParis.
