Thispromising1950sUniversal-Internationalcontractplayerhadsomuchgoingforher--beauty,brainsandtalent--togothedistance,butshecameupfarshortafterdecidingtoretirefordomesticlife.Notrememberedallthatwelltoday,prettyandwholesomeblondePeggyDowwasbornMargaretJosephineVarnadowonMarch18,1928,inColumbia,Mississippi.Herfather,abusinessman,movedaboutquiteabitbutthefamilysubsequentlysettledinLouisiana,wheresheattendedcollege(bothLouisianaStateandNorthwesternStateUniversity),majoringindramaandappearinginseveralcollegeplays.Afterbriefmodelingandradioexperience,shewasspottedbyatalentagentandcastinaTVshowinFebruary1949.Shortlyafterthatexposure,Universalofferedheraseven-yearcontract.Bypassingthestarletbit-partroute,shemadeanauspiciousfilmdebutco-starringwithScottBradyinthethrillerUndertow(1949),inwhichsheplayedavacationingschoolteacherwhoaccidentallygetsinvolvedinamurder.Hersecondfilm(whichsheactuallymadefirstbutwasreleasedlater),WomaninHiding(1950),wasalsoacrimethriller,co-starringIdaLupinoandStephenMcNally.Showingclearlythatshewasuptothetaskofplayingloveinterestswithdepthandrange,Peggy'sstarbegantoascendwiththesetwomodestefforts.Shehitherpeakwhensheco-starredasthelovelynurseintheclassicJamesStewartfarceHarvey(1950)andappearedoppositeArthurKennedyinthetouchingwardramaBrightVictory(1951),thestoryofasoldierwhoisblindedandmustlearntoreadjusttocivilianlife.ThesetwodifferentrolesshowedHollywoodthatPeggycouldhandl
