HoedemanwasbornduringtheGermanoccupationoftheNetherlandsandsurvivedtheHungerWinterof1944-45,whenmanyofthecity'sresidentsdiedofstarvationbroughtonbyaGermanblockadeandotherfactors.Attheageof15,HoedemanleftschooltoworkasaphotographretoucherintheprintingindustryinhisnativeHolland,butsoondecidedtotryfilm.HefirstworkedatMultifilm,asmallproductioncompanyinHaarlem,andthenatCinecentruminHilversum,whereheworkedintheopticalandspecialeffectsdepartmentandhelpedoutwithcamera,laboratoryandsoundworkwhenhecould.HoedemanspenthiseveningstakingcoursesattheSchoolofFineArtsinAmsterdamandtheSchoolofPhotographyinTheHague.Ashisskillsimproved,hetookonmorecomplexwork,includingtransitionsandmodels,andeventuallybegandesigning,editing,anddirectingcommercials.HoedemanimmigratedtoCanadain1965withhisthen-wife,onthechancethattheNationalFilmBoardofCanadamighthirehim.HeshowedupattheNFBwithareelofhispreviousworkunderhisarm,andwithindayslandedajobasaproductionassistant.HisfirstmajorprojecttherewasaneducationalfilmcalledContinentalDrift.HethenmovedtotherecentlycreatedFrenchAnimationStudioandmadewhathecalledhisfirst"real"film,Oddball,in1969.Wantingtolearnmoreaboutstop-motionanimationtechniques,hewenttoCzechoslovakiain1970tostudypuppetanimation.Onhisreturn,heproducedtheinnovativeandcharmingchildren'sfilmTchou-Tchou(1972),madeentirelybyusingwoodenblocks.Then,hemadeaseriesofanimatedfilmsbasedonInuitlegends:TheManandtheGiant,TheOwlandtheLemming,TheOwlandtheRavenandLumaaq.HecollaboratedcloselywithartistsintheArcticcommunitiesofFrobisherBay(nowcalledIqaluit)andPovungnituktoillustratethelegends,usingsealskinfigures,soapstonecarvings,anddrawings.HisnextprojectwastheveryambitiousTheSandCastle/LeChâteaudesable,atouchingfablethatearnedhimtheAcademyAwardforBestAnimatedShortFilmatthe50thAcademyAwards.Thiswork,whichfeaturedanarrayofoddcreaturescreatedfromfoamrubber,wire,andsand,wonnumerousinternationalawardsandhasproventobeanenduringfavourite.Witheveryfilm,Hoedemanexperimentedwithnewtechniquesandmaterials,includingpapier-mâché,papercutouts,andcomputeranimation.In1992,HoedemancollaboratedwithagroupofNativeandInuitinmatesatLaMacazaPenitentiaryinnorthernQuebectomakeTheSniffingBear/L'Oursrenifleur,acautionarytaleaboutsubstanceabuse.Hefollowedthatwithanotherseriousfilm,TheGardenofÉcos/LeJardind'Écos,anecologicalfablethatshowsjusthoweasyitistoupsetthebalanceofnature.In1998,Hoedemanreturnedtohispassion–makingwhimsicalchildren'sfilms–bycraftingaseriesoffourpuppetfilmsfeaturingLudovic,asweetyoungteddybear,andhisfamily.TheSnowGift(1998),ACrocodileinMyGarden(2000),VisitingGrandpa(2001),andMagicintheAir(2002)wereeventuallyreleasedtogetheronDVDunderthetitleFourSeasonsintheLifeofLudovic.HislastfilmasanemployeeoftheNationalFilmBoardwasMariannne'sTheatre(2004),whichhecompletedafterlearningthatheandfellowanimationpioneerJacquesDrouinwouldbothbelaidoffjustshortofretirement,victimsofbudgetcutsandtheNFB'smovetowardhiringfilmmakersoncontract,ratherthansupportingfull-time,permanentstaff.Hoedemannowactsasanindependentfilmmakerandconsultant.Heiscurrentlyworkingseveralprojects,includingtheproductionofananimatedTVseriesbasedonhisLudovicfilms.Hoedemanisthesubjectoftwodocumentaryfilms:NicoCrama'sCoHoedeman,Animator(1980)andIntheAnimator'sEye:AConjurer'sTales-CoHoedeman(1996).
