Averitableeverymanofstageandscreen,bothbigandsmall,butrelativelyunfamiliartoAmericanaudiences,MichaelCraigisofScotsheritage,borninIndiatoafatheronmilitaryassignment.Whenhewasthree,thefamilyreturnedtoEngland,butbyhiseleventhyear,theymovedontoCanada-whereheundoubtedlyacquiredhisNorthAmericanaccent.HeleftschoolfortheMerchantNavyat16,butfinallyreturnedtoEnglandandthelureofthetheater.By1947,hedebutedonstageand,in1953,SirPeterHallgavehimhisfirstleadstagerole.Inthemeantime,hewastryinghishandatextraworkandhadspeakingrolesby1954.ThiseventuallyledtodiscoverybyRankFilmsandalistofleadmovierolesintotheearly1960s.Whenhis7-yearcontractwiththatcompanyexpired,hewasoptionedbyColumbiaPicturesandhisHollywoodcareercommenced.YethisAmericanworkisperhapsonlymodestlyrememberedintwofilms,ironicallyco-AmericanproductionswiththeUK,MysteriousIsland(1961),andAustralia,theDisneyTVinstallment,RideaWildPony(1975).Bythemid-1970s,Craig'sTVandfilmworkwasheavilyconcentratedinAustralia(wherehestillresides)andcomposedadepthorroles,bothcomedicanddramatic,thathasincludedmemorableandsolidcharacterpiecesashehasmaturedinage.Asascreenwriter,hehaswrittenforandcreatedseveralBritishTVseries.Andhehasneverbeenfarfromthestage,remainingafamiliarfaceinbothLondonandNewYorktheater.
