Bornin1971andagraduateoftheStLukasArtSchoolinBrussels,artist,photographerandfilmmakerBavoDefurneestablishedhimselfasanexcitingnewtalentwithasequenceofcriticallyacclaimedprizewinningshortfilms,thatexaminehisregularthemesofgayloveandloss,thebodyandthepowerofnatureandsilence.CAMPFIRE(2000)wasaclimaxofBavoDefurne’sshortfilmmaking,receivinginvitationstoscreenatmajorfestivalsandwinningseveralprizes.ItwasboughtfortelevisionbyleadingbroadcastersincludingCanal+inFranceandChannel4intheUK.BavoDefurnehasachievedtherarefeatofhisshortsbeingreleasedinafeaturelengthcompilationincinemasandonDVDbyleadingindependentdistributorsaroundtheworld,includingStrandReleasing(USA),Mikado(Italy),BritishFilmInstitute(UK),Salzgeber(Germany)andCinemien(Benelux).BavoDefurne’sworkhasalsofounditswayintoartgalleries.Inadditiontoitsacclaimonthefestivalcir-cuitSAINT(1997)iswidelyregardedasahighlysignificantartisticrepresentationofSaintSebastian–afigurewhohasinspiredmanyartworksovercenturies.IthasshownatexhibitionsintheKunsthalle,ViennaandSalaKubo-KutxainSanSebastian.2011seesthereleaseofBavoDefurne’slongawaitedfirstfeaturefilm,NORTHSEATEXAS(NoordzeeTexas)whichadvancesthethemesofhisacclaimedshortfilms.BavoDefurnesummariseshisfilmmakingphilosophyasfollows–,“Idon’twanttoshowpeoplewhattheyseewhentheylookouttheirwindows,Iwanttoshowwhattheycanseewhentheyclosetheireyes.”BavolivesintheportcityofOstendinBelgium,onthecoastlinewhereNORTHSEATEXASwasmade.
