Producer,songwriter,andmulti-instrumentalistJonBriongrewupinamusicalfamily:hisfatherwasdirectoroftheYaleconcertandmarchingbands,hismothersanginjazzbands,andhissiblings,Randy(aconductor/arrangerinL.A.)andLaurie(aviolinist),werebothavidmusicstudents.YoungJondidn'tdealwithinstructionorpracticewell,buthisnaturalaffinityforimprovisationandmelodymorethanmadeupforhisimpatience.Unwillingtoconformtotheconventionalschoolsystem,BrionattendedspecialeducationclassatHamdenHighSchoolinNewHaven,CT,andthedayheturned17,heleftschoolforgood.MovingtoBostonin1987,theyoungmusicianformedmanybondsthathewouldkeeplongintohisprofessionalcareer,includingproducerMikeDenneen(ownerofQDivision,Boston'spremierstudioandrecordlabel)and'TilTuesdayvocalistAimeeMann.Alsowhilethere,Briontunedhisimprovisationalmusicalabilities:"IusedtowatchTVwithanunpluggedelectricguitar,onthecouch,andcommercialswouldcomeonandI'dtrytoplayalong.ItwasoneoftheprimethingsIconcernedmyselfwithforseveralyears,gettingtothepointwhereifIheardit,Icouldplayit.ThenIstartedworkingongettingmybraintodomultiplethingsatonce.Andhavingmyhandstranslatethem."ThisproficiencyledtoincreasinglyfrequentstudioworkontheWestCoast,eventuallyresultinginhismovetoL.A.WhileinCalifornia,heandJellyfishguitaristJasonFalknerformedtheGrays,anundergroundsuperstargroupwhichreleasedthe1994albumRoShamBo,beforequicklyfadingastheothermembers(Falkner,DanMcCarroll,andBuddyJudge)wentontoindividualmusicalsuccess.Throughoutthe'90s,Brionfoundhimselfincreasinglyindemandinthestudio,producingandcollaboratingonalbumsbyAimeeMann,FionaApple,RufusWainwright,DavidByrne,andtheEelsandsoundtracksincludingtheGrammy-nominatedMagnolia.
